    Hard Top Re-spray

I'm just starting on the hard top I bought last year. It's in superb condition, but a Pimentoroof on a BRG car doesn'tmake for a good colour combo.

Does anyone have a procedure, or advice on how to remove and refit the rear window and trim? (Apart from don't!) Do I leave the stainless trim in place? Do I have to remove the lower lining to push the bottom of the screen out first? Any advice would be welcome to save me lousing it up.

    Hi Mark

My Hardtops still sitting in the garage awaiting re-assembly following a respray. I just removed all the chromes and cut the rubberto remove the rear window. I know you can get the window out with the rubber still intact but I didn't want to risk breaking it. Bottom side chromes need the rivets drilling out, side windows unscrew, then you can pull the headlining out from around the rear and side windows. Front chrome unclips. I left the long gutter chromes on but the sprayer removed them, breaking them in the process.

If you're doing a complete colour change are you going to remove the rubber's and spray the underside as well?

All done now, I ended up cutting the screen rubber from the outside since I couldnt get enough purchase to push it out from the inside.I've saved the headlining as this is a replacement and still in very good nick. I Now have a lovely solid bare shell to work on.

The onlyreal puzzle now is how do I re-fit the rear screen when the time comes?

      What thickness cord works best?

Do I fit the stainless trim before or after the screen is fitted.

        Mark,

I found, after many attempts, that it was easiest to fit the stainless trims after the window was in. The rubber seal has a lip, into which the trim pieces fit. I used a suitable-sized length of cord to raise this lip, allowing me to slide each upper section of trim in place, removing the cord afterwards. Fit the lower section and secure with s/steel self-tapping screws at each end.

Fiddly job and one worthy of leaving it alone to get a cup of tea if you find yourself struggling. Come back half-an-hour later and try again

One of the four best pieces of advice I was ever given by my Grandad.
          • Nowt's cheap unless you need it.
          • If you buy rubbish you've paid too much.
          • They don't sew pockets in shrouds.
          • When you have had enough of doing something, stop.
