    Header tank

Just fitted header tank and started stag which overheated and blew water out the heater hose (I think ) to hot to make certain Stag never overheated before with original bottle arrangement. Went with header tank for security Now i hope I won't be sorry Any ideas why it overheated ??

probably a large air lock !! let it cool down and jack the nearside corner front up then slowly fill the system ,let it run on tickover for a while with the cap off the system should vent and you can top it up then . make sure the heater valve is set to hot /open.

I have a stag webber tank fitted to my stag and its an excellent piece of kit. It took about an hour to fit and works fine. I didn't have any over heating problems. When I filled mine I made sure the heater was on full and filled the tank to the top started the engine and let it run with the cap off I also kept squeezing the hoses to help the air out. When the car was up to temperature went out for a run I did lose a bit of coolant as the rest of the air bled out of the system. When cool topped up again and it's been no trouble since. My tank finds its own level which is about one and a half inches below the filler neck. Regards Rob

I've changed my coolant maybe four times and on the last occasion, with no prewarning, mine overheated badly.

It was, as Stagmuffin has suggested, a massive airlock. No idea why I got one that time but, once sorted, all was well.

                Good luck.

                Cheers

Hi Julian, nice to hear from you again you gave me good advice in the past so I will give it a go again this morning. its like a nightmare when you see steam shooting from the engine ( do you also have a header tank fitted ?)

Glad that my advice was useful previously

Yep, it was a nightmare for me when I saw, and heard !, my system overheating with that air lock - I'd have never dreamt that you could get that much air trapped so I hope this is the cause of your problem.

                    Since that ex
perience I have taken the simple option, which seems to have worked well for me, of just fitting an expansion tank (from a Land Rover) higher up, although I know the wisdom of this way has been debated - currently on another post.

Good luck and still not sure why the 'Somerset' in your user name ??

                    Cheers

Thanks Julian. I will let u know how things go. The Somerset idea came from my very first car an Austin Somerset 1952 which was about. 10/12 years old when I bought it for every day use Tim

just started stag with near side raised and header cap removed, ran for about 15 mins pressing large hose and when it got hot it expelled quite a lot of water.switched off as I was getting anxious about the amount I was losing, is this normal when the cap hasn't been replaced, temp gauge showing marginally over half.

This all happened to me when I first started messing around with the car. Had the geyser effect too which was scary so I also switched off.
The guys here talked me through the filling procedure; it's on a thread by me about this time last year.
Now I fill over up over time, letting the air locks come out overnight etc. Now if only I could get to that point again....

The thermostat is supposed to have a little air bleed in it to stop air getting trapped, sometimes they don't seem to have them and the thermostat stays airlocked. Tanya's idea of leaving it overnight might help.
