Wiring question

Probably a simple question for you all, but my RH courtesy lamp works when I use the master switch, but it wont work when I open the drivers door. The ear must therefore work for the bulb holder if the master switch works and with regards to the door switch, that must be working as well as my door puddle lights works.

Any suggestions much appreciated as its been a long week

This is something to do with alarms and/or imobilisers. Mine do some strange things and there are other posts on the subject within the forum

I had the same problem on the LH courtesy light, I ran a new earth wire from the bulb holder to the door switch, problem over.

courtesy, puddle and interior lights have proved to be one of the more difficult areas in which to solve problems. Mk 1 and some MK2 conform to the published wiring diagrams. There does not seem to be a diagram for later cars.

Earlier cars use a door switch which has two terminals and the switch is not earthed. Later ones have only one terminaland the circuit is completed through earth. The wiring to the switch on the console is also different, as may be the switch itself.

Then the real problems begin. Some cars have been fitted with the wrong switch, either for door or console and wiring has been adapted to get some kind of acceptable working. Sometimes the wiring loom to the console switch has been swapped. If yours is a Mk2 with the centre fitted light on the roll bar be aware that each of the two lights works to a separate circuit, one to each side. Taking that light off and putting the wrong live feed to each lamp again upsets the circuit.

I don't think you could have been any wider of the mark with your opening line " Probably a simple question."

Interesting being that there was changed. I certainly didn't know this. I have a later MK2 and I know that there is power at the bulb, so I am going to cheat and put an earth wire to the door switch as my door definitely earths to the bodywork. If this doesn't work, then thank you for your offer of assistance and I will come back
