    Triumph Stag V6

    Hi all,

I've been busy under the bonnet for a while now, replacing many parts.

Rather annoyingly, i've had a flat spot/miss between 3-4,000 revs since i've owned the car.

I'ev changed everything for new and have been dismayed to have the fault remain. I've also been a little concerned with the thin blue smoke in exhaust and carbon/black from exhaust on hard acceleration. All leads were sparking but I noticed that if I took a lead from a particular cylinder on each bank, the spark was there but there was no drop in engine revs.

Last week I got a nasty shock from the "new" distributor cap and realised that the quality of the new leads and new cap was poor. I ordered a new set of better quality leads and cap on line and changed them over yesterday.

I thought I would do the job properly and located No.2 on the cap and worked anticlockwise from there to the relevant cylinder number. I soon realised that I have been driving for a year now with two of the leads going to the wrong plugs on opposite blocks!!!

I now have a V8 firing beautifully on all 8 cylinders with no missing at all across the rev range, no blue smoke and no clouds of black smoke on acceleration. The engine is now smooth and powerful! (I was even asking on here the other day about engine rebuilds and piston ring replacement!).

Whilst it was nice to have a rumbling V6 for the last year, I prefer the V8 version.

Just hope I haven't caused any damage

Thanks to the PO for putting them in the wrong order and well done to me for doing it properly this time!

Several times in the distant past I had managed to swap the two left bank middle leads on my Rover V8 engined Toledo, it never sounded any different but the lack of performance gave the job away instantly.

Not so easy when you have bought the car with the fault kindly installed by the previous owner.

I would give it an oil change in case unburned petrol is contaminating the oil.

Hi guys, I am struggling with a bit of rough running, seems fine when revving stationary but under load it just seems to hold back a touch at lower revs, do you have any photos showing the correct lead orientation? Just wondering if this could be my problem too.

        Regards

          Hi,
I would try a new coil also if the leads dont sort you, I bought a Bosch Red, its a qualirt item.
As for the leads, look at the distributor and at about 11 o'clock (as you look from the nearside of the engine), there is a mark running up the entire length. Thats number 2 cylinder. Start with that one and take the lead to No.2 as marked above each cylinder. Moving anti clockwise from there reading from the firing order stamped on the inlet manifold, follow that order matching the next lead to the corresponding cylinder, as marked in separate locations on the inlet manifold above each cylinder.
I dont have a pic but if you get stuck I can take one and post tomorrow.
          Hope that makes sense.

This is an illustration from the Stag parts catalogue and it shows that the leads for cylinders 3 and 5 are interdisposed. If people do not spot this they would connect cylinders 3 and 5 to numbers 5 and 3 on the distributor. Perhaps this has happened in some cases. I hope this illustration helps and is suitable for Paul.

Hi, just to add to the confusion, this shows number one lead, connect that first, then simply follow the firing order, yes, it really is that easy.

You should just be able to see a white dot on the bulge in the side of the dizzy, that is the place for the number one lead. Martin.

Went to the theater last night, herself drove, we wound up in the bar with some of the cast and Stag friends so I put a few away and returned to a pile of emails, stayed up and played for a while. Regretting it now. M.

This is a very interesting thread. Since getting my Stag I have felt it is underpowered and has a slight miss so I am considering replacing the HT leads and plugs. However, using the information in this thread I have checked the HT Leads and at first glance they appear to be in the correct order. However, from Martin's photo it looks like my number 1 lead is in the wrong position

                              IMG_0285.jpg

in the above picture the lead to the left of the spring clip holding the cap on goes to Cylinder 1.

I'm I correct in thinking that lead should go to cylinder 2? If so is it a simple case of moving each lead clockwise (looking from o/s wing) one position?

                              Thanks
