Cam cover flame trap - removal

I have my cam covers back from being powder coated and knowing that I should remove the gauze from the OS cover I duly attacked it with my dremel. I thought I'd be clever and only remove the return lip, this allowed me to pull the gauze out with some needle nosed pliers and I patted myself on the back. Luckily as I was rinsing the area through I noticed some wires sticking out at the opposite end, I then realised that the gauze has in two sections and I'd only removed half of it. A bit more time with the dremel and I was able to peel back a strip of steel and hook out the other gauze pad. It wouldn't have escaped in service as the vent pipe retains it but it was full of rubbish and best removed. I'm not going to replace it, I have an RV8 flame trap that I'll use in the vent tubing and replace as appropriate.

You mean it looked like this?

    The answer isn't 42, it's 1/137

It might do if it was cleaned up a bit, as it's in the bin full of oily filth no, it doesn't look much like that

Landrover too, it's made by Britpart, they make lots of LR parts.

I,m planning on making my complete cover removable , here is progress so far , i,m going to create a slide on method and use the cam cover bolts as a stop. Its best to do this stage before coating as the heat from the spot weld removal could lift the outside coating. Once i have spot welded new lips in to create the slide i will get it coated up simples
Hope its of any help , Edd

I don't wish to poo poo the idea chaps, but any oil that is trapped as it passes through in the original set up will drip back in to the engine, whereas if you put something like that in line it will fill up over a period of time possibly and when half full be drawn in to the manifold Just my thoughts

                    Very true Ian.

IIRC we changed the flame traps at every big service on the RV8s. Now I realise why

                    Cheers

That depends on where it is mounted Ian. If you mount it vertically above the breather it could be arranged to self drain. The way I see it is that you can effectivelt re-create the trap outside the cam cover and this is more convenient than stripping out and cleaning the one in the cam cover.

I have been running a self draining catch bottle now for a few weeks. This is filled with steel wool, and it successfully collects all oil vapour and drains back into the cam cover. No oil is getting into the air filter now.

But I wonder if the Rover flame trap is big enough to collect all the vapour?

I was just working on the assumption that it would be connected in line with the existing hose Chris, if you start trying to mount it vertically then the plumbing starts to get a bit involved and IMO would look a bit Heath Robinson

The Rootes one would be a better option IMO as you can un clip it and clean it.

I wouldn't mind a quid for every one of these I cleaned all those years ago in the Rootes dealers

Can you clean the plastic version? my intention with the RV8 one was to just replace it frequently, either that or I get tempted by a nice shiny ally catch tank.

The Rootes ones have a plastic mesh inside Ian that can be washed in petrol/paraffin etc. The only issue you may have is the pipe connections. IIRC the Rootes ones are larger than the Stag ones but something could be fabricated. it may even slip inside the connections and could be neatly taped up or heat shrinked.
