Testing fuel sender and fuel warning light

    Hello,

As long as I own my Stag, the fuel warning light has never shown reserve mode. I therefore wonder whether the warning light and the fuel sender are working. The fuel gauge seems to be working correctly.

How can I do a quick test?

    Regards,

My warning light comes on under acceleration when I get below a quarter tank. Actually it's a bit alarming when you put your foot down (or give it the jandal as they say down here ) to see a red light come on the dash!
Pretty easy to test this if you pull the boot floor boards the wiring from the sender unit is right on top of the tank.

I believe you can pull the green/orange wire (IIRC, not near the car at present) at the fuel tank and earth it. The gauge and warning light are two different circuits. You can exclude the warning sender this way.

Hi, I have a related question. Since I last filled up, the gauge seems to be working correctly, but the fuel warning light stays on permanently. As I'm a bit of an auto electrical novice, can someone suggest how I find out what is going on?

          Thanks in advance

          Cheers

Gord, sorry, I can't help. But at least the bulb of your warning light is working

I checked both wires. Earthing the first wire let the fuel gauge signalising a full tank. So I think the gauge is working correct. Earthing the other (green/orange) nothing changed and the warning light was off. Measuring voltage on this wire was approx. 7 V.

For me it seems to be a bad warning light bulb. Therefore the easiest test could be ...

If the light does not illuminate when you earth the relevant wire, most likely the bulb has blown. Mine had, and I discovered that after I ran out of fuel.
Header tanks - you can't beat a bit of bling.
