    Noise from distributor

    Hi there
wonder if anybody has any ideas? there seems to be a, best described as a singing sound coming from the distributor, could hardly hear it at first but has steadily got worse, have just fitted a recon dizzy but sound is still there could it be a worn hex shaft.

I had a similar problem when i started mine back up (after sitting 2 months). A soon as a grabbed a stethoscope and prodded around to find the noise it went away.
It sounded like it just had to be coming from the distributor, but when I placed the stethoscope on the unit it was quiet and humming along.

You can use a long handled screw driver or piece of metal in place of a stethoscope, but you need to use one to verify the location of the noise if you haven't done so already.

I have known (though not on a Stag) of one or more bob weights coming loose, swinging out and quietly machining a groove inside the dis. body, certainly worth checking. Martin.

You know one now Martin ,
This is exactly what I found on mine, the noise was'nt always there but gradually got louder. When I pulled it apart, I was amazed how it did'nt jam and blow a hole in the side of it.

Good find mate, I've seen, amongst others, an old Renault, where a bob weight had completely machined through the body, it promptly fell off and the car stopped. A nuisance, but at least not an over-expensive fix. M.

            Thanks for replys,
stripped old distributor everything seemed ok, replaced recon distributor with old one, still the same noise,
put recon distributor back on noise has changed slightly to a brrrrrrrrrr. checked all round listening with screwdriver, noise does seem to be coming from distributor, can deaden noise a bit by holding distributor & feel vibration. car runs ok

I would try a screwdriver stethoscope on the water pump cover too just in case noise is transmitting down the length of the jackshaft.

Could it be the oil pump? The dizzy and the pump are effectively connected with the hexagonal shaft.

                  Regards
