    lumenition to powerspark

Just reading another thread and a member has changed an old optical ignition system to the powerspark magnetic module for just over 30 quid with good results. I have an ageing Lumenition system on mine and just wondering whether to go for the change as the system must be over 10 years old now although I don't have any issues with it yet other than the wiring is looking a bit ratty now. It aint broke so should I fix it (tempting though )

I don't intend to fit it if I can solve my problem by other means, however I'm running out of options.

Hi Peter, I've recently changed my Luminition to Powerspark. I had intended to buy a Pertronics kit bit ordered the wrong one. (It's an age thing - and they both begin with P!) The Luminition system was giving me an intermittent misfire so had to go and I was warned to be very wary of the really cheap systems. Having said that, It was a doddle to fit but I did have to advance the ignition by about 10 degrees and it has since performed perfectly over the last few hundred miles. They're also cheap enough to keep one as a spare. Out of curiosity I checked the dwell angle and it was bang in the middle of the spec.
            Hope this helps

Well I ordered one last night in case my other attempts at curing the cutting out fail. Arrived today at 9.30

Will only fit if the misfire is still there today

Peter. Mine wasn't broke either, but was about 10 years old, and the previous one had lasted about that long, so I thought I would change it before it let me down again. I had been persuaded to buy the Powerspark by a good salesman at the Stoneleigh show this spring, and I just thought it was time to give it a go. Perhaps the old Newtronic unit was getting a bit tired, but it was working perfectly as far as I was concerned. That is why I was surprised what a difference the Powerspark made. And, no, I don't have any connections with the company! Mike.

I carry an Accuspark unit in the glove box, incase the lumenition I have under the bonnet fails. The Accuspark unit is easy to fit but the timing also needs to be adjusted so I carry a timing light in the boot!

Thanks or this thread Peter. I've just ordered a Powerspark to replace my Luminition set up and looking forward to results.

I've just come to replace my old Luminition system with Powerspark. Could anyone please help?

There are 3 wires coming out of the dissy which go to a unit bolted next to the wiper motor. It looks like a heat sink as it has fins. There are other wires which leave this unit and are connected to other wires which disappear into the bulkhead.

                        1. Is the finned unit part of the Luminition system?
                        2. If I follow the wiring instructions of Powerspark, they just say connect the 2 wires from the pickup to the coil. Does this make the finned unit redundant?
                        3. Are the wires which disappear into the bulkhead part of the original points wiring and need to be connected to the coil?

I've also noticed that one of the screws which holds the Luminition to the baseplate is missing so I think I'll lift the dissy in case it's fallen into the body.
The vacuum advance seems to work.

                        Any advice gratefully received.

                        Steve

                          1. The finned unit is the Lumenition power module
                          2. Yes
                          3. Don't know without knowing what wires these are, why not put up a photo or tell us colour of wires. Depending on the age of your Lumenition there will be either a brown or a purple wire going to the coil, you won't need this with the Powerspark obviously.

Guessing the wires from the distributor are red, blue & black which are the old lumenition optical pickup wires.

Coil as standard (mk2) should have a white pink and white yellow on the + side, and a white black/ white slate on the -.

From the loom near the distributor will be a white black for the points. The lumenition box will have brown, purple and red wires coming out as well. Red goes to a power, often the inertia switch, the purple and brown go to the coil - these wires can come off.....

I just removed the luminition wires from the dissy and wired in the powerspark as per the instructions. I had to cut the luminition wires as the connector wouldn't pass through the hole in the side of the dissy. Whole thing took about half an hour
