    Speedo glass removal

The glass (or is it perspex?) in my speedo is dull and unsightly and I want to replace it and the rubber seal. I also need to replace the seals in the other dials too. Does any one know a way of opening up the securing tags on the back which secure the bezel to the main body? It looks as though loosening them and then twisting the bezel about an inch should allow it to lift off but the trip meter reset button doesn't allow twisting on the speedo. The other alternative of course, is to replace the whole speedo with a cleaner one, but then the mileage reading would not be correct.
    Any ideas anyone?

I would be interested in this as well as I would like to polish the bezels bright. I think the speedo is Perspex and the other gauges are glass. I think I read thinners could be used to remove the paint but not near Perspex.
    Cheers Rob

I've (nearly) always found those little tags pretty resilient.

As you suggest, for most gauges they need just a slight tweak - put a small screwdriver in and just give it a slight twist - to loosen their grip and then just twist the bezel.

For a speedo with a reset knob, you'll need to bend the tags back considerbly more. Try to do one quite a bit and the others less so and then pull up on the edge where you've loosened the one most.

      Good luck.

      Cheers

the transparent bit is glass - or should be. take it off as julian says and wash it. you'll need new rubber seals.
can't understand the idea of fitting a new speedo 'cos the glass is dirty, is your ashtray full ? m.

speedometers with front knob reset are perspex( nasty things never clean up that well)
speedometers withe rear cable reset are glass
I USUALLY REPLACE THE PERSPEX WITH GLASS after drilling a suitable hole with a glass drill

Thanks for the constructive comments. It seems there is no easy solution. I'm finding it virtually impossible to get anything under the tabs to loosen them off sufficiently to release the perspex and bezel.
I don't suppose there is a product on the market that would remove the milkiness and restore the shine to the perspex?

You can restore Perspex but takes some effort, have a look here http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature...&v=5sZg9cj2hxI this is a headlight obviously but the same materials should work for you, probably more cost effective to get a glass bezel if you don't have the right stuff available though.

                  Thanks Martin. No problem.

Well, having watched the Youtube video - thanks Ian, - I was inspired to try a similar ploy. I rubbed it down with increasing grades of abrasive pastes and the results are quite impressive.
I started with Halfords rubbing compound, then T-Cut, followed by T-Cut Metallic and finally AutoGlym Super Resin Polish. The most time consuming part was getting in around the trip meter button. It took about an hour in total, and though not quite as gleaming as polished glass, it's 95% there. If I repeated the whole process, I think it would be even better.
Thanks again to everyone who helped.
                  Geoff

Why not just send it off to Alan 157.7 (above) he will refurb it for you. You will have to phone him or send him a PM though as he will not mix his business and pleasure on this forum after disrespect from some others on here. He also advertises in the back of the mag.
