hi all,is it much of a job to inspect the timing chains?i wouldn't do the job myself so is it likely to be expensive to have a specialist do it?also once stripped should they be changed anyway?
Are you inspecting for a reason? Having stripped down to that stage it would be wise to replace the bits anyway. Its not a particularly difficult job. The hardest bit I found was replacing the front cover with gaskets above and below to keep in place, and I did bend the top head gasket which was a sod to reshape. A friend's advice was to cut away the protruding sump gasket which makes it easier to replace cover and use instant gasket. Seems to have worked.
