    No oil pressure warning light

    Hi, me again....

This car has never had an oil pressure warning light. I renewed the connections at the switch and it was working ealier this summer. Now it's not working again. It seems as if there is no power to the light in the cluster. I earth the switch wire to the engine and still no light comes on. I've tried several bulbs and the circuit tester light, no joy. Other warning lights appear ok. I've traced a purple/black wire from the brake light until it dissappears behind the dash, and the warning cluster purple/black wire and it all seems good (what is that ghastly treacly stuff in the looms?).
Centre red light is bright with ignition on (I'm assuming the oil light does come on with ignition only????)

Before I trace purple/black and white/brown wires further behind the dash, does anybody know where is the junction marked by the red arrow on the circuit diagram for my car?

    Thanks!!

I think that would have to be the multi pin plug on top of the heater accessed through the speaker grille. Have you checked the oil warning light in he dark?? It's a green light and ain't very bright at the best of times.

Hi Tanya, centre red light should only be half brightness as a test with ignition on if it is fully bright it means your brake Pdwa valve has been upset, try disconnecting the wire from the brass unit by the wiper motor with the brake pipes going to it and see if your oil light now works as it should.
      Cheers Steve
well done on your progress btw

After all you've been through - at least it's only the warning light for the oil pressure

I converted my Mk1 to the Mk2 system which has a proper full 12v oil light. Easy mod too.

The oil light does come on with the PDWA wires disconnected (new cap). I've got the warning light cluster apart, so it's easy to see the bulbs lit.

Access to those multipins under the speaker will be tough now I've installed the retrosound speaker, it ain't going nowhere!

It might be easier to convert to the Mk 2 system?? How did you do that?

Or, I can see the purple black wire from the centre brake light and the purple/black wire to the warning cluster. Can I splice into the brake light wire direct to the purple/black going to the warning cluster right behind the dash panel (ie; a short cut)

I'm going to have another go at finding the electrical fault today. I'm sure the whole 12V is going through the brake light and that's why its bright. It goes out when starting the car. The dash gauge panel is open and when I walked into the garage yesterday, hubby has the crossmember off, oil filter and the exhaust downpipe off. All to remove the sump for a fresh gasket .

I suppose this situation is begging for a combined water/oil gauge to be fitted..... so I ordered one

The whole oil light / brake light can get a bit confusing and I'm sure I remember that there are some cars whose wiring isn't as per the ROM, just to make things more complicated, I'm afraid.

                Good luck.

                Cheers

                Julian.

ps, you could always have just an oil pressure gauge and not worry with the light.

I see that both purple/black wires are combined together in the multipin. Nothing looks amiss there. In case there was a loose connection within the multipin, I made a similar connection nearer to the brake light. I got exactly the same situation: Bright light + no oil light on ignition; remove the connection to PDWA get dim light and oil light on at ignition. Chopped up wires for nowt .

Do I really have a brake problem? (Can't start car - no oil)
