Gears crunching?

My '76 MOD has good stong synchros in all gears and the o/d works as it should and clutch is all good. But when I change up to top from 3rd with o/d engaged I occassionally get a grating of gears. No problem when o/d is not engaged and it happens when hot or cold.
Is this a characteristic of the box or should I be looking at something?

I think this is due to the O/D being engaged while you change gear. There is an inhibit switch that lets the O/D operate only in 3rd and 4th. As you go through neutral, this inhibit switch will switch the O/D off and then back on again as you go into 4th. This, combined with the change of ratio 3rd/4th could easily give a little crunch as the 4th synchro will get confused.

I think you have nothing wrong, but I would advise not changing gear like this. As you change from 3rd O/D into 4th, just flick the O/D switch off. Then you'll have direct 4th which should stop the crunch. This is what I do and it does seem OK.

The other solution is to just use the O/D in 4th as a long legged gear. Mind you, 3rd, then O/D 3rd is a great for overtaking!

I second Mike's proposal.

Mine always did this.
As the years have gone by, gearbox and OD have both been rebuilt - and it still happens if I try it.
So, I don't try it anymore...................
