53 Dark Brown appears on Triumph paint code charts but I don't know if Stags were available in that colour originally.

Mine is Maple Brown with Chestnut interior.
There is also a Russet brown which is a little more vivid.
          I'll post pictures this evening.

This might help. http://stagbytriumph.co.uk/ if you open colours and trim tab, then click on the text of the colour it will bring up a picture.

Never thought of my Russet Brown Stag being 'vivid!' - anyway here's a photo, I have a non standard cream interior

                    Dear All,

Triumph produced a colour code chart - some colours are trim colours and some are paint colours - and some were not used on Stag.

63, chestnut, was a trim colour (it is actually a dark brown) and, as far as I know, 53 was not used on the Stag range, so I don't know whether it was a trim colour or a paint colour. It may not have been used on any of the range - just a colour which could have been used if Triumph had wanted to. Alternatively, it could have been used on the early T2000 range as a trim colour and when Stag came along they thought that they should make the official colour a bit more classy - so they called it Chestnut.

Can anyone who used to work at Canley confirm Triumph's thinking here ?

I cannot find any reference to the brown trim colour in my car. According to the ID plate on the door slam panel this is colour 43.
Google finds me this information (from 1999 in a page which is not accessible anymore): 43. Saddle Tan. 53. Dark Brown. 63. Chestnut

The http://stagbytriumph.co.uk/ link only specifies three brown interior colors: beige / chestnut / tan. Which one is 43?

That is saddle tan (code 43)

Beige (code 74) is often mistakenly referred to as Tan.

                        Cheers

If your car was originally Sienna brown with a Saddle Tan interior, the chassis plate on the door B post should have

LE*********U If it had had overdrive it would be LE*******UO
                          colour - 23
                          trim - 43

                          Hope that helps
