Chain tensioner oil oil hole and dowel.

I have looked through a few posts on this subject and wanted to ask a few further questions. I have removed my existing non standard tensioners to find one dowell murdered and crushed sawn slightly off. In the picture the lower ones are the ones removed . out off all four rolon tensioners only one has a tiny hole drilled all the way through. My thinking is this tiny hole should be the size of the dowell which then makes me think rolon are making every one of them faulty which will result in a poorly lubricated chain. I thnk suppliers should start carrying a warning with these parts.
    Any ideas ?

I didn't like the look of the rolon tensioner body so i used the new foot in the old reynold body, seems to be working ok.
    Cheers Steve

      Hi Edd,

I found exactly the same, tiny holes and one of them wasn't even drilled right through. I reused the Reynold tensioner body as Steve already said.

      Kind regards
      Ian

Ok so it looks like i have to drill out into the chamber the size of the dowel then step down on entering the chamber to the internall size of the dowel to stop it just falling through .
I would use the old original but as you can see i,m swaping rolon for rolon , rolon next summer i say

They are videos I posted a couple of years back. The tensioners (both parts) are Rolon with the tiny holes. As you can see from the video the oil flow is adequate to keep the chains lubricated. The real problem in my opinion is the fact that the holes are so small means they are easily blocked.

And hence in total agreement i drilled out the holes to suit the inner oil hole passage and will ensure the dowel remains flush with the block. One tiny particle would block the existing holes. I couldnt see the point in drilling out to the dowel diameter as it would just fall through and rub on the spring loaded piston of the tensioner.

I also think this thread should be moved to the technical section .I f you fit those tensioners some are not even drilled right through so it's a problem waiting to happen.

Hi Edd the technical section doesn't contain long threads just single posts produced as info guides and "how to do's",As a technical section administrator i don't appear to have the tools to move threads to the technical section, but what we can do is approve and move to sub folders etc articles submitted into that section. If you would like to post in an article detailing the problems with the various chain tensioners That would probably be the way to go and would be very helpful to others.
                  Cheers Steve

Ok cheers Steve I will do that. Hopefully everyone is in favour of the way I have done this mod.
I would love to see pictures on the original.

If i remember correctly there was also an issue with the exit holes being in different positions ,some came out of the centre of the foot and others came out somewhere else but cant remember where ,ill have to search it.

                      cheers steve

Just looked and there are 22 threads on the subject Wow,all pretty much saying the same that the small holes seem to deliver enough oil but could block up too easily, and larger holes will drop oil pressure. It would be good to have definative answers. Some of the threads are quite old so some of the members that opened up the oil holes must have put some miles on the engine by now so would be good for any feed back.
                        cheers Steve

I think the design is to lubricate the plunger whilst also the the oil probably helps as a damper to the spring. The clearance is minimal in the tensioner so a slight pressure would build before it escapes The excess oil seems to literally bleed from its bore and drip down onto the chain. I like the idea of a hole going through the heel of the tensioner and will look into that idea . Brainstorming I love it cheers Steve

Me too - the Rolon one had a hole barely big enough to pass light through so I did exactly the same as you Steve. I also noticed that the new foot fit rather better in the old Renold body than the Rolon one which says little for Rolon tolererances!

                            Cheers
