    Strombergs - Petrol Overflow Pipes

    Just for something to do (!) i've rebuilt my Strom's with Viton tipped needles and have them fitted back in - all working fine but will need fine adjustment, the one problem is what to pipe use for the petrol overflow on each carb;
If you buy a kit with the t piece etc (which I have) from e.g. Paddocks you are supplied with 1/4" ID pipe - this is fine for the t piece but the outlets on each carb need 5/16" hose, 1/4" is too small.
Has anyone else had this problem, is there a reducer pipe maybe or is it just a case of trying to expand the 1/4 pipe to fit?
Interestingly the parts manual shows that the adaptors (514934) used for the breather pipes are also used for the fuel overflow but that cannot work obviously as they need an even bigger diameter pipe to be used.

One other thing i've managed to do (and quite pleased with) is to have both chokes running off a single cable - I only tried as running the Holley it only needed one cable and stupidly I cut one off some years back thinking i'd never need it.

I'll get a photo of the set-up but it could save a lot of cost on buying new double choke cables, especially if you have to get the new knob to fit too.

Incidentally, nothing wrong with the Holley at all, just fancied a bit of experimentation!

    Cheers

Interesting re using just one choke cable, look forward to the pics!

Re needle valves, despite comments here against using the Grose type because of problems with their threads, I bought a pair from TR Revington and they were fine. No problems so far..............

    Cheers

I too would be keen to see how you got away with one choke cable. My engine is out at the moment and I thought about replacing my frayed cables until I saw the price of them.

With a lot of care, diligence and, most of all, luck you can make up a twin cable set up with inner and outer cable from a bike shop.

The tough bit is getting the two cables held tightly in the 'shaft' of the choke knob, however, it is do-able. With a lot of luck (certainly not skill in my case ) I got it to work.

        Cheers

          Hi Julian,

I did this once before too years back, you just need to get it soldered in well - certainly a cheaper option and you get to keep your own knob (i'm very attached to mine!)

Any thoughts on the petrol overflow pipes?

          Cheers

            Hi Mike

I used 5/16" hose from carb. I simply ran each hose to the front of the engine and didn't bother with the T piece.

            Regards

            Bruce

              Photos attached

The left choke cable (white one) is in fact a bicycle cable cut to size with the adjuster (taped).
My car used to be an auto so part of the mounting bracket used was originally used for the auto linkage, in the first photo you will see a small additional bracket which holds an additional spring to return the RHS lever which has an additional lever attached to 'power' the LHS cable.

                  Hi Andrew,

Strange this, I got them working when i first uploaded and then something mysterious happened.....

                  I'll have another go

                  Cheers

I wonder if you could adapt a Norton/Triumph one into two throttle cable to do the double choke?
They have this junction box:- http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/244-104-TW...item5d388d5e8f which you can get cheaper, inside they look like this custom one:- http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/244-104-TW...item5655070f1b
The round part slide in the middle of the main body, it has one cable down the centre attached with a small soldered nipple, then the two outside slots are for the two cables that you would run to the chokes.

I would think you could use one of the existing Stag choke cables, maybe cut down and with a nipple soldered on for the centre slot, then you would need a couple of the Triumph cables that run to the carbs.

I have a Holley so dont need to do this myself, but if anybody needed to try this, just request and I will give more information, part numbers, pictures from my own box of cables etc.

                      Pete

That could be a good idea Pete.

One possible problem is that the hard bit is getting the cable(s) to stay in the metal rod on which the choke knob is fitted.

Even with this connector, you still have to get a cable fitted there and if you rely on using one of the original cables then the load on it will be doubled - and there IS quite a load on those cables (eased by pressing the accellerator when pulling the choke out)

                        Worth a try though

                        Cheers

You certainly need to press the throttle pedal before pulling out the choke even with 2 cables
