    M.O.T.

Took the Stag in for M.O.T. this morning only to be told 'No M.O.T.'s ' today, the system is down right across the south of England. So if you are booked in -phone first.

    Bob,

mine passed yesterday at 4.57pm first time - maybe it was the shock that it passed first time that has sent the system into melt down.
I can now play arround with the carbs again to make it run properly - not just MOT emission style.

anyone beat 1.89 co2 on the emissions? car was barely running - owners of cars built before 1975 need not answer:X

I've got one due next week.......unless I fix the headlights dipping wrongly and align themit's a guaranteed fail, even with my connections......

Got my doubts about the efficiency of the handbrake, but it does work, and you can bring the car to a stop with it - eventually -although everything appears to be in good order, and adjusted correctly. Not that the Stag handbrake was ever any good from new.

I'm going to take my carb tools with me, and adjust it on-site if the emissions are off... as I'm a post 75 car.....

Same here Bob. They are hoping the system will be up and running later.

They must have repaired the computer system, because my Stag got MOT'd OK by 2.15pm . It passed with flying colours, which is a great relief

As it is a 1972 Stag, it only needed a visual emmissions test but I chatted up the tester and he did tests on it for me:-

            700RPM

            CO 3.63 %VOL

            CO2 12.36 %VOL

            Lambda 0.921

            HC 286ppm

            O2 0.74% VOL

            Oil temp 14.5 deg C

            and one at 3000RPM

            CO 1.86 %VOL

            CO2 13.86 %VOL

            Lambda 0.963

            HC 111ppm

            O2 0.40 %VOL

            Oil Temp 16 deg C

He said these figures were pretty good

It does about 25mpg round and about, and runs very smoothly.

He spotted a crack in the alternator belt which I must fix promptly

            Al

BTW I think this beats Ian B's by 0.05% - any advance?

This is pretty good - especially the HCs - shows the bores are in fair nick...

Thanks for your knowledgable comment Russ. Reassuringbecause when I bought itI was told the engine had only done6000 miles since rebuild in 1996 (and then 1500 miles since March when I bought it). Looks like there is plenty of life left in it yet.

HC's are hydrocarbons I guess, so this could be remnants of unburnt fuel and oil getting past the rings? Its nice to know I'm not wasting petrol or oil and fouling up the air.

Not quite but yes - the usual way it happens is rings/bores wear, the combustion gas blows past the rings and pressurises the crankcase, raising the crankcase temp at the same time.

This pushes hot, oily vapour up the breather system and into the carbs/manifold where it's meant to burn harmlessly - except this vapour doesn't like to burn at idle speeds as the combustion temperature isn't high enough so it goes out unburnt....

this is the normal cause of high idle HCs when wear is involved..

                        Does that explain?

The system was up and running again this afternoon and managed to fit me in at 4.30pm. Remember my previous topic of I think my carbs need viagra? well I richened them up quite a bit and now my CO level is 1.10% and my HC level is 198ppm. The car passed O.K. But the examiner told me that as from last October number plates with honeycomb background and 3D lettering (black and silver) are now illegal. The lads at the M.O.T. station gathered round and decided mine were 2 shades of black.

Russ, are you sure you're not Kingpin. Ever thought of opening your own stag workshop? Bit far for me to travel though!
