towing a car on a trailer with another car

    Hi All

I am in the process of purchasing a donor car to help with the repair of my stag. I have a hired a trailer for the weekend. When speaking to my car insurers they inform me that the trailer is only covered third party and its contents (the donor car) will not be covered. This is despite my policy being full comp.

I asked about including them in the full comp policy and they said they could do it for the trailer but not the contents. However, the policy is trailer specific which is not a sodding lot of use seeing as it is a hired one!

Has anybody got any suggestions on who to contact with regards to insuring the donor car itself duirng the 200 mile journey to my house? Do I need to take a seperate policy out for the donor car? I had hoped to just take out a fire and theft policy on it once it was safely stowed in the garage but I suppose that won't cover it on its journey.

    Bruce (puzzled)

    Hi Bruce,

I don't have any recomendations regarding who would insure the donor car - if it were me i wouldn't even consider insuring the donor unless i was going to drive it on the road.

    cheers..........Andy

Not insuring it is fine unless something happens i.e, trailer blows a tyre and I end up with a car (with 2k)spilt onto the road.

      Cheers

        Hi Bruce

I think Footman James will cover you for something like this as they insure traction engines, vintage tractors etc which are moved about on a trailer. Good luck!

Yep - i know where you are coming from - if it were me i'd accept the risk - but i'm sure an insurance company will be happy to take the risk on your behalf

Thanks Brian. I havehad a look at their website and they have just the policyI need, namely "laid up insurance" which also allows for transport to and from repairs etc.

            Cheers

Footman James quoted £39 for a 12 month laid up policy including transport to and from repairiers etc.

              Good value

              Cheers
