Took my daily runner for mot today 97 pug 306td
Managed to get a failure on rear box quick trip to europarts for new box £40 i fitted it and returned to mot station to book in for retest they did it there and then pass result total spent today £67.50 yes mot only £27.50 with free retest.

Andy that is the every day price my pug was the same price last year and i also took Stag this year.
The Stag will be going back next year.

The set fees are a maximum but garages can charge less if they want

We had our MX-5 MOT'd at Halfords - Pre Booked online at £29 I think it was.
Sure - I'd be wary of work creation schemes - but it went straight through ;-)

My garage told me they can charge what they like up to the £54 . Also they have to buy upfront the MOT slots from DVLA each month like a book of stamps to allow them to register the MOT on the DVLA website.
As for the cheap £25 MOT my theory is that they rely on doing the repairs to make up the money, perhaps that me being cynical. The DVLA knows the average percentage of failures and passes so they keep a note on every test centre to make sure they are doing it correctly

I was not accusing garages of pressing to do the work or making false failures , I was only suggesting that they probably relied on doing the repair to help outweigh the cheaper MOT . I hope this is not heading for another mud slinging match as I have seen a lot of on this site since I joined a few months ago
