Hi, i guess i have now made my mind up im going to try and get my car up to a mot-able state and then it`s going, i have owned this car for nearly 6 years and it`s the worst car iv`e ever owned, im going back to something more manageable and cheaper to run, all that buy the best car you can afford is rubbish for me it was a bad purchase..i don`t miss it i have lost faith in it it`s just a over priced money pit i need to get shot of asap Cheers Adrian

Wow Adrian, that's sad but surely after 6 years you know having a stag is a bit like being married lot's of ups and down's. I think you have to be a bit special to own a Stag especially if you cannot repair it yourself (I take my hat off to those guy's) I think you have to love the car, Yep it can throw it's toy's out of the pram, can be expensive to run,and sometimes drive you to distraction ( remind you of anything yet lad's) but when it's running right and the sound of that exhaust never fails to put a smile on your face. But you are absolutely right if you can't handle the ups and downs then ( it's divorce ) get rid of it, and buy a dull, boring ,reliable car, that will never give you any trouble (maybe) but it won't make you smile have others waving, tooting their horns, or saying nice car I used to have one of those. I hope you can sell it soon and are luckier with your next purchase. Cheer's Graham

Sorry to hear that Adrian, I know you've had a lot of problems with it, so I can understand where you are coming from. Are you planning on buying something else instead?

      Best Wishes

Thats a shame Adrian, anyone not knowing your car would read from your post that its a bit of a state which those of us that have seen it can definatly say its not,but I understand where you are coming from.Mine has got me down this year a couple of times but i know once i fire it up again all will be forgiven. You say it is the worst car you have owned but i thought you had a Rover 75?LOL

        Cheers Steve

Sad reading Adrian, but the reality is when you lose the joy of owning a car its time to part. I have been where you are with the MM. Genuinely wish you luck one way or the other my friend.

I'm not sure that any car 40 years old can be expected to be reliable. At that age they don't owe anyone anything. It's not hard to buy something more reliable but it would likely need to be a lot newer. Something like a 3 series convertible might fit the bill if looking for a similar "spec" vehicle.
Not sure I'd agree with "overpriced". Stags are cheap compared to most other classics IMHO - Adrian's experience might explain why!

But even a Beemer can bite you in the bum. This was in this months Practical Classics and I know people who've had loads of (expensive) problems with them

              Cheers

Wow Ade that's a shock and something you may regret? After going on our family holiday this year I really couldn't part with mine, when its time for loads of money to be thrown at it again Ill have to sell one of my kidneys!

good luck with your next car but it won't be special like a Stag

                cheers

i know I own. A BMW and it leaks more oil than the entire fleet of three British cars? reliability has been nothing to shout about either. I was just trying to think of a similar spec 2+2 convertible.

Hi Adrian, we have all been there at onetime or another. What in particular about the car are you not happy with or have problems with? I thought the engine was sorted and it is yellow

Hi, thank you for all your kind words but i have firmly made my mind up now i have poured £1000`s into this car and getting nothing back from it, i brought the best car i could find and paid alot for it but it has been a disaster and i can`t keep throwing more and more money at it so i am going to cut my losses and departing from it and i want to go back to a MK3 Cortina, if anyone wants a very tidy stag that just needs abit of engine work let me know.. Cheers Adrian

What's wrong with you lot in Northants? all selling up, the Stag is not too bad to keep on the road if you consider the costs of repairing moderns. Trying to get my head around a routine timing belt change on my Audi A6 TDi V6 quoted £1200 from two people to replace a rubber band that not even broken. PAS belt is £63. For £1200 you could have half a recon Stag engine. Quoted £2400 to replace the diesel pump, ended up paying £1400 with mates rates.----Hang on in there.

That is sad news Adrian but have to say I've been there myself this year but didn't actually sell it, felt more like setting fire to it and watching the b##tard thing burn. Fortunately I didn't do either and I've still got it. Trouble is if I work out the time and money I've put into mine and then think about the cost per mile it's just not worth it but when the car is going right it's fantastic, trouble is I'm always watching the temp gauge and oil pressure these days. Jump into Debs Hillman or the Commer and don't seem to have those worries and you do feel that they would get you any where and back with no problems whereas the Stag always seems to have a nasty surprise just waiting to happen so I can see the attraction of an old Ford. Trouble is old Fords ain't cheap and the Mk3 used to rot everywhere so finding a good one ain't gonna be cheap.
Good luck whatever you decide to do but what's gonna happen to the pink trolley if you sell the Stag, does that go with it.
Also please pass on my best wishes to Martin if you see him

£1500 for a clutch on my Vauxhall because it has to have a new dual mass flywheel at the same time. £350 for an alternator on my work van (without labour!) because it has the high pressure diesel pump built into it, another Vauxhall. The Stag is cheap to run in comparison..
