Anybody know about Landrover Discovery 2 's?

My brother is after buying one in Canada, it's a 1998 4.0 V8 efi with 95k on the clock - it's going for a very good price, and they will take his wife's Taurus in P/X.

I have just been posed this question by him, as I think he wants to move quickly on this car, so I posted up on the Landyzone landrover forum this afternoon, just as I would on here...

I had 9 replies in 30 minutes, all of which were total B******S - it was like dealing with delinquent 3 yr olds....

So I ask of anyone out in Stag land.... does anyone know if these are of any good? I don't want him buying a car on my say so that turns out to be a pile of poo - as standard.......obviously I can't check it over for him.....

    Cheers

      Thanks John...

I think they need 4 wheel drive to make up for their lack of motor function in their enfeebled brains......

Russ, i think the chassis is prone to rot like the normal landrover defender! The engines are strong as we know. I am told they're pretty good motors. Obviously fuel consuption isnt an isue for your brother!!

Like you, i wouldn't want anyone to buy a car on my say so!!

            Hi Russ

Nice to be able to help you for a change.

There are the usual electrical problems nothing specific but make sure everything works. All the V8s in this country have air suspension on the back self leveling etc can give trouble - air bags etc leak causing the pump to run continuously and overheat also the plastic air pipes run close to the exhaust!

If its a auto tell him to make sure the air con drain has been altered so that it does not drip onto the switch that tells the trans ecu what gear its in as that is a common one with the usual expected results.

The engine can suffer from cracked liners. Difficult to diagnose but do the usual checks and get a warranty!

Cannot think of much else specific to them. Just make sure EVERYTHING works! Would recommend oil changes more regular than Land Rover suggest - hydraulic tappets are prone to sludging up.

            Hope this helps a bit

My last motor was a DII 4.0V8 and I rebuild rover V8 engines (amongst other things landrover-ish) for a living.

DII is a good motor, a lot more reliable than the P38 rangerover!

There have indeed been quite a few issues with the air suspension (fitted in the UK to XS models and above, and all 7-seaters regardless of model) and as has been said these are attributable to leaks that are left unattended. The airbags are fairly cheap and easy to replace - if it sags overnight, find the problem and replace the bag/pipe etc as required and all will be well.

Wheel bearings can be expensive and show wear at around 70k miles, a new hub bearing unit is required as the bearing is not user-serviceable.

ABS sensors can be problematic at high miles, the trick is in correct diagnosis of what sensor has actually failed!

As to the V8, well, so much has been written about slipped liners and cracked blocks elsewhere that there isn't really much point in me repeating it. Basically, if it shows symptoms of head gasket failure and the gaskets have already been replaced once, or it's bubbling gas through the header tank, or using coolant with no leaks, it's more than likely new block time. Fit a top-hat linered block (UK £1000 exchange!) and all will be well for ever and ever onwards. Check for camshaft and follower wear at 80k miles plus, and change oil every 8000miles for a decent quality 10W40 multigrade.

Autobox is good, electronics seem to be good and reliable.

Chassis corrosion has been mentioned - not as big an issue as some would suggest, but early DII chassis seem to corrode very quickly at all the welds. Get a good one and apply treatment from day 1 and it will last ok.

Check the main front to rear brake pipes (2 off) along the top of the left hand chassis rail, they are very prone to rot where they get blasted with all the road debris from the left hand rear wheel. Easy to replace though.

Rear brake calipers can partially sieze and bind if left dirty after heavy off-road use - nothing a pressure washer can't prevent.

                  Badger.
