Missus and I are heading up to Preston tomorrow for a Weller gig Saturday, but she wants me to take her to Blackpool to have some chips on the beach tomorrow night - no, not a euphemism.
I used to work in Blackpool, but for the best Fish and Chips I would nip up the road to Fleetwood which was then a Fishing Port and the fish you ate there was landed that morning. Years though since I was in the area so probably everything has changed. By the North Pier (I think it was) there was also a "Yates Wine Lodge" which served some great hot beef barmcakes (freshly sliced from the Roasting Spit) and you could wash it down with draft champagne. Don't know if the Wine Lodge is still there though. I think the Illuminations are on at the moment, and the best way to see them is to drive to "Little Bispham" and catch a double decker tram there that goes all the way to Blackpool Pleasure Beach and back, or you can enjoy some fish & chips in Fleetwood and catch a tram there.
I worked in Blackpool in the 70,s and it was in Blackpool that I bought my 1st sports convertible - a Mk3 Triumph Spitfire, then 2 years later traded it in for a Mk4 model.
I can't recommend any particular chippie but am aware of these:
The Cottage, 31 Newhouse Road, Marton, Blackpool, Lancashire FY4 4JH ~ Tel: 01253 764081. Apparently it features in Rick Stein's 'Seafood Lovers Guide' as the best fish & chips in Blackpool.
Or, Taylors Fish And Chips, 461 St Annes Road, Blackpool, FY4 2QL, this used to get good reviews (up to 2012).
The Harry Ramsden's outlet near the Tower usually has a queue out of the door at this time of year - I presume you know that the Illuminations are on at the moment and the promenade (Golden Mile etc.) will be heaving with people & traffic. You can plan on a good hour to drive a mile to two past the Tower and Pleasure Beach on the prom.
Personally I wouldn't eat outside at this time, the shore side of the prom will be busy and that's before you include the stag & hen parties careering about. The coastal side of the prom, which has recently been nicely renovated, is in darkness for the most part with only the light from the illuminations to see by.
To be honest about Blackpool, the seafront promenade is the worst part of the town. Sorry to be a bit of a spoilsport but there are nice places to eat just off of the seafront though you may have to wait for a table as this is one of the busiest times.
The illuminations are great, especially if you haven't seen them before or for a long time, but the people watching element is even better fun !

Thanks for the tips guys, especially Mark - I'll definitely watch out for the stag night brigade... seem to remember a tv documentary that was a tad unsavoury about them.
