Some suppliers sell a collar that secures inside the top of the column to eradicate play. It works fine.

The collar as Dave says is the best bet, Tony Hart also sells them, I tightened mine up a couple of years ago by inverting a socket and tapped the sprag washer down in the top of the column. Don't forget to keep my bacon roll warm

        Hi Dave,

Seeing as you're on this thread, I wonder if you've seen the propshaft info I posted for you on the other post.

        Cheers

          Hi Julian,

Yes, thanks. I was going to respond but my Son-in-Law turned up with concerns over a noisy clutch pedal and lazy starter on a Rover 420. Just finished spraying WD40 on all the moving parts of the clutch system. Took the starter motor out and found that, despite it being a new Rover fitted item about 4 years (10,000 miles) ago there were numerous loose screws and electrical connections on it. Also the main body earth was rusty. Now all sorted and I can get back to the important things like this Forum. Couldn't get my a Stag water pump fixed because I missed the postie today by 5 minutes and the package needed a signature. Got to go to the sorting office on Monday to collect it now

LesM has posted some good info on lengths.

I started a thread about this a while back and how I cured it, I didnt find the collar mod that good, especially without somebody to push the steering rod up as I pushed the collar down.

What I did was to precisely measure the gap between the top of the top steering column bearing, and the bottom of the steering wheel, and pack it out with alloy shims in such a way that all play is taken up, but the bearing isnt loaded, the steering wheel nut then is what holds it all together, far more securely then 3 tiny Allen screws as the nut also draws the whole assembly together which is why you have to be careful not to over pack with shims and bruise your bearing.

My steering is now rock solid but still turns freely, whats more, you wont have to take your column apart.

The first picture shows job done and the shim I used which I cannot remember what it was, I think they where sump drain plug washers from e-bay, fortunately they where just right in that I didnt need thinner shims.

The second picture should have been posted first, shows me measuring the distance between the top of the bearing and the aforementioned collar without allen screws that I used as packing butting up against the indicator cancelling clip in its preferred position whilst pulling the steering rod out as hard as I could using the steering wheel.
After filling that gap with the washers, I did the same measuring between the top of the clip and the bottom of the steering wheel boss.

As you can see I put the collar next to the bearing rather than the clip, and it should be measured such, rather than the way my second picture shows, less chance of bearing rock giving you the wrong measurement.

When you measure between the clip and the steering wheel, use one less washer than the measurement suggests, that way you wont accidently bruise the bearing, you will be left with a small gap that is easier to measure to get the correct size of the final shim you need, you will have the steering wheel correctly torqued and pull up on the wheel to measure the final gap, then fit shims to precisely take up this gap and no more.

well assembled my steering column for about the 4th time tonight with a complete new bottom thrust bearing assembly and bush ,also fitted the new inner to outer plastic bushes .then I finally fitted two new top yoke bearings as the old ones were quite sloppy ! but before this I ordered some new 1/8th balls to refurb the race top and bottom this made no difference so that's why I opted for new bearings at about £55 delivered anyway they are fitted and the new lock ring also instead of the sprag washer and guess what its pants I've still got side play in the yoke top and bottom bearing not much but its there and very annoying ! if the assembly could be pre-set as a bicycle yoke is then it would be fine im sure but im not at all happy with the new bearings the design albeit the same as the old is poor cheap to be more concise. has anyone else found this problem and how did you engineer it out ? I know nambo has done it with washers but im thinking a complete new modern thrust bearing assembly maybe .
