    Will this clear the cam?

Having taken inspiration from Edd's approach to making a removable flame trap cover I set out to do the same. My neighbour took the cam cover to work and made the sliding brackets, he has welded them on lower than the original piece was however and I am now concerned it might foul the cam, what do you think?

I assume from the picture that the two plates tacked to the cover hold the lid in position and it slides out to allow cleaning ? if so what retains it ? im not sure I would want a loose plate rattling around under one of my covers which could potentially move and spill the gauze out into the cam area to end up in the sump/pump etc. correct me if im wrong ian but this is a worrying mod .

My neighbour has bent the forward tab downwards, I will change this so it points upwards, forward motion will be prevented by the cam cover screw.

When fitted, will the cam cap and studs not retain it?

I made my slot a very tight slide fit talking you have to use a flat driver to push it in. I have removed the flap you have now bent up. It sits in the same place as before so fouling shouldn't be a problem. When the cover bolts are fitted they act as a natural barrier to keep them in place.
Like any mod it's open too improvements along the way but the thought of either leaving sand debris oil and gundge and it being spot welded in place is a bad design from the outset.mine was totally blocked I would stress before fitting do a simple in situ clearance test with some plasticine.

My concern is that my cover sits lower than yours Edd, hence my question about clearance. I will bend the tab upwards, it might well detach at that point anyway!

Don't forget your cork gasket too that's rather think even after compression. You have me worried now. My heads are still at my friends workshop so I will check it out too. My main though was I kept to the same witness mark where the cover was before so in theory nothing has changed.

I think that these flame traps have lasted about 40 years, probely without ever being serviced once. Whilst I would now always replace an old one, I would not think it necessary to make it 'serviceable' unless you are a 'young' stag owner who expects to be still driving it in 40 years time. But then maybe I will live to 100+

I will post again when I'm 84 to prove my point I did mine mainly to reassemble after coating. If you remove the cover you have too spot weld again hence damaging the coating. So for me it had a dual use. I also think if you inspect these breathers you might replace them if you could actually see the state of them. At least this way you can inspect and not always replace. Mine were so bad I expect they were the same 20 years ago like most on here its nice to return things and improve a tad on the way. I remember look at cvh engines and what a state they could get in after only a few thousand miles.

I did mine for the same reason as Edd, to facilitate reassembly after plating/coating the cover. I think I'm going to make a new plate with longer "legs" so it sits at the original height, the longer legs will still slot in the new brackets but there shouldn't be a clearance issue.

I must put a note in my diary to remind Edd to post when he's 84..

Ok I have my heads back. My mod works perfect and have the same clearance as before. My panel is virtually the thickness of the metal down from the cover. The cams also only lift as high as the cam caps so if it does hit its miles off where it should be as shown on my mod. I will post on my thread when I replace my gauze but for now I'm pleased.

We'll have to wait 40 years then
