    Door lock problem

Afternoon all. My first post here. I've just bought my second stag after a 25 year gap.

My new (old) stag is a beautiful saffron yellow Mk1 and i'm just getting to grips with various little jobs. I'm not totally un-practical (I did build a Caterham a few years ago) but be gentle with me.

The problem-n/s door lock was v stiff when locking with the key and would also not engage when the inside door catch was pressed in. A good squirt of GT 85 into the mechanism and I tried again and hey presto, completely buggered it! The key now just rotates easily in the lock but does nothing.

I've removed the door trim and can see a locating pin from the handle mechanism has popped out of a hole on a bar in the lock mechanism-and no way can I re-locate it. I can get it close but cannot see how it fixes on place. Looks like some sort of circlip or spring washer?? This would also not explain why the inside lever does not engage the lock though-so presume two problems.

Anyone with any ideas how to sort this? I could of course remove the whole lock mechanism and the door handle but in the end I'm going to have to re locate the pin in-situ so not sure how this would help.

An exploded diagram of the lock would be ace!

    Cheers Bruce

    Hi Bruce,

If my memory serves me well, the clip you are looking for is on a swivel. It rotates up to the rod. Very, very fiddly.

Not much but hope this helps...........a bit.

I've found the rod and can offer the pin to the hole just cannot see how to get it to locate and stay there!

Any idea why the lock may not engage from the inside door lever? That appears to be a seperate issue.

          That does look helpful. Thanks

Looks like I just need long fingers-or smaller ones. I suspect a spring washer has fallen off the 'far' side.

I guess the lock is faulty anyway-or otherwise it would not have been so stiff and popped off the rod.

If I cannot fix it I will defintely want it to lock from inside.

Most of the rods are held with clips like these.

You put the plastic part through the hole in the lever, or whatever, and then put the bent end of the operating rod into the hole in the clip. You then swing the metal part round and clip it to the rod to lock it all in place.

Hard to explain but I hope it makes some sense

            Welcome to the forum btw

            Cheers

              Julian.

Really helpful, thanks so much for posting.

I could see something like that on the end-now I know how it goes together

If only that photo was actual size it would be easy of course. The previous owner added 25 layers of waxoyl to everything inside the door too just to make it more fun.

It's nice to be here btw, and nice to own a Stag again. I proposed to my wife on the bonnet of the last one, and we'lll celebrate our 25th next year with the car too-well that is the plan.

I have similar problems. I found my circlip and washer in the bottom of the door with a magnet. I got completely blathered with waxoyl. I didn't have any problem locating it on the lever - maybe smaller hands. I think that it's necessary for the clips to hold it in the right place on the arm otherwise the internal lock doesn't work or you turn the key too far. I had that with the key turning so far that to get it back out it unlocked again. I've still got to play about with it.
Does anyone have any suggestions for the washer and clip - listed on Rimmers but no longer available. Surely something would work

Not quite sure about a circlip and washer, but the clip I showed in my picture above was from Bresco. I haven't checked the sizes but it may well work.

                  Cheers

I was after a clip a little while ago as my external door lock won't work. I think LD parts sell an alternate version, but haven't got round to ordering one yet to try it. I just set the alarm instead, which locks the passenger door!!!

Your right Nigel, I got some from LD parts, when I did mine, but they are a very tight fit.

                      regards
