9 vane water pump.....

    9 vane water pump.....

    and that's because I've broken 3 off so far trying to hold the vane and undo the bolt (clockwise!). Its got to come out now

    When holding the vane and turning the bolt, the jackshaft rotates and the bolt doesn't loosen off. So, any ideas?

    I'm thinking that the pump could be pulled out with the bolt in situ? Alternatively I could possibly try locking the jack shaft but fear straining the gearing teeth.

    Does the bolt simply hold the pump together or does it help secure it into the housing?

    All help appreciated.

    the bolt holds the pump together, but you know its a left handed thread

        You dont need to unscrew the bolt to remove the pump. The pump is a press fit which can often be ejected simply by turning the pump by the bolt. If this doesnt work, ie the bolt comes loose then you will have to use a slide hammer to remove it.

            Hi Brian,

            Coincidentally I did this job earlier this week. In my case turning the bolt lifted the entire pump out of the block. I was then able to secure it in the vice and dismantle it there.

            If you are rebuilding it with the LD Parts seal take great care in assembly. It is very easy to damage the water seal.... This time I was much more circumspect and used tubes of various diameters to push it all together carefully. The vee is currently 100% dry for the first time in about 3 years

                Well you could always make up a puller with a piece of flat bar drill and tap the impella screw a couple of bolts through the bar into the impella drill and tap the bar with a couple of blolts to push against the block as you said you dont want to damage the gears

                  Usually if you try to undo the bolt (clockwise cos its a left hand thread)the pump will wind itself out on the skew gear,its happen every time I've done it but it may or may not leave the brass cage in place

                    Here is how I removed my pump. The bolt sheared off beforehand.

                    I tapped the two holes in the impeller and screwed bolts into it through a spreader plate I made. The slide hammer did the rest.

                      It's still fighting me! Vanes are all gone, bolt head snapped off and tap broken off in shaft. Could it be worse? A friend is hoping to make up something to grab the shaft so I can use a BIG slide hammer. I'd be lost without a tool maker buddy

                        In extremis you could weld something to the top of the shaft? Of course that would be the end of it's usefulness.

                            Thanks, it may come to that in the end. I'm already considering an external pump and hence have given up on keeping it original. This pump will very likely be US when out and from what I read I'm not convinced with the less than perfect "new" replacements.

                              Brian,

                              Some impellors dont come off the spindle in one piece no matter what is tried, which may make you feel better about the damage.

                              Ask here first...its cheaper & most soc areas have people willing to help out too. Sorry its too late for this time.

                              A new triumph pump will be cheaper than an external setup, so long as its done properly.

                              The ford external is a neat offering, as is the ewp.

                              An ewp will be the thick end of £500.+ fitting
