Painting aluminium castings - which paint?

Having stripped and cleaned my gearbox and overdrive casings I planned to give them a dusting of aluminium paint to ward off the dreaded salting/corrosion. I bought two cans of Eastwood Aluma Blast via Frosts, as it claims to give that "fresh cast aluminium look".

Trouble is, it's a bit champagne coloured and not really very original looking. Okay so the gearbox will be out of sight under the car but I was also hoping to use it in the engine bay too.

Anyone got any other types of paint they can recommend for this purpose?

I've just used Rustoleum / Combi color on my rear suspension arms and have been well pleased with the result.

I do find their range a little confusing but this is the one I used here: http://www.rawlinspaints.com/product....F9s6XNT6.dpbs

I also found their 'Stainless steel' paint brilliant for my wiper motor: http://www.rawlinspaints.com/product....fNQqd3D8.dpbs

    Cheers

Good morning, that looks really good Julian, wish I had the facilities/courage to undertake doing mine, as I have no garage/drive I wouldn't risk doing it on the roadside.
In the meantime I do need to cure an oil leak from my camshaft covers, I have all the seals/gaskets do I install them dry or should they be coated in grease or hylomar or something else ?
      Cheers Drew.

Did you run out of paint before you got to the diff?

Hi Julian, I'm just about to order some of that for my trailing arms - thanks for the recommendation. Which of their bewildering range of paints did you use for the black bits?

Hi Nick, Very good . Diff is still a work in progress and, if you saw an earlier post of mine it could still require a lot of work

Hi Drew, I know what you mean. I have no garage and so all my work is done under a marquee. At least that's better than my first Stag where I had to remove the engine, entirely on my own, with the car on the main road in front of my house I then dismantled it on the pavement

As for your camcovers, I'm sure you'll get several different opinions. I used a little Hylomar to fit them to the cam covers and then on the face to the head.

            Cheers

            Julian

Most of the 'black bits' are powdercoated. However I did use their paint on the prop and shock absorbers as the heat, used in powder coating, would ruin the seals and rubbers. I can't remember off hand which paint but as soon as the rain eases off a little I'll go and have a look for you.

              Cheers

                  Ok Paul,

Rain eased off - I got to my shed - heaven's opened up

Anyway, it is this one: http://www.rustoleumaerosols.co.uk/p...roducts_id=440

Slightly oddly, I reckon, they describe it as 'Satin Gloss' - I would have thought it would be one or the other but I think it looks really good.

Yep I find their range pretty confusing and the various websites where it is don't usually help but their paint is excellent I reckon.

                  Cheers

                  Julian

Ps I love this description: May be applied directly to stable (not loose) rusted steel. One-coat hiding. Better obliteration.

Thanks Julian, If this car (see thread can't bring myself to break it yet) turns out OK it might get some powder coating but paint will do for now. I've got the back end off so when I get bored with welding I can give it a freshen up. I see they do this satin in a Moss Green, isn't that the colour of your car?

                    Thanks again

The way my car's sat around for the last month or so, partly while I was ill, I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't covered in moss

In fact, right now, it's covered in a layer of metal dust and rust dust where I've had to attack it's underside with angle grinders and wire brushes etc. Not quite like yours but still a bit messy.

                      Cheers

Very good Paul, that made me smile

Don't find enough time to be bored though - just proud of my painting

                            Cheers

Ps Bit worrying though that we've done 11 of the 14 posts here - and we didn't even start the thread

Hi Drew, I made sure my cam covers were not bent by overtightening, them cleared the gasket groove and degreased it and glue the gaskets in with evo-stick, so that they do not move when you are fitting them, make sure that the heads a clean as well, I think some use hylomer or welseal etc, i just greased mine.
But i did stone my heads were the gaskets fit when they were removed, but that is no good to you, hope this will help , other will be along soon i'am sure.
