Soft top choices

I am bout to order a new soft top from Aldridge
My choices are a pre facelift with side windows ( as my car is a 1972) or a single window
I prefer the 3 window choice but am worried that the side windows will crack on use.
My other choice is colour
My car is white with black interior, it currently has a MKinstalls 2 black roof but I fancy a red roof with black inside to match the interior
Has any one any comments about the windows or colour please

When did the 3 window hood go? i thought it was before 72. My personal choice would be black to match the interior - but I'm a traditionalist, I'm sure others will have different opinions.

dont know about the side windows as you say may crack over time,as for the colour steve (stagmuffin ) has a red roof and it looks great, but dont tell him that or hell get a big head

I thought that's why they did away with the side windows because they don't stick up with folding too well. Steve has matching interior so the roof look's like it belongs. I fancy a dark blue roof but then the car is blue. I just think the roof has to match to somthing interior or car colour.just my unarguable and professional opinion

Go for single window end enjoy a new roof a sthey are not cheap and you will forever be thinking about looking after the side windows. I would have a red top either as it will clash

Staggard is right,they did away with the side windows because they would crack when folded,especially when cold ..

Unless your car is pretty early it would not have the side windows..(either H or J reg I would have thought)then I would go for without..

Others will have their opinions,so stand by..

I have a 1972 Stag with a three window soft top. Complete p.i.t.a to put down to ensure windows aren't creased etc. Only good part is when its up the visibility is better and its lighter inside for the kids in the back! Once its had it (not too long probably), will be getting a 'normal' hood!

If you go for a Mk2 single window hood you may find the black lining too dark; beige lining makes it brighter inside. This helps to make up for lack of side windows.

Coloured hood covers cost more than black, and may not have the lining options of choice.

Also note that if the frame is from a Mk1 car the Mk1 side catches are crap, but then it can be converted to Mk2 catches.

Finally: even if you think it's OK it's advisable to have the frame recond and painted before fitting a new cover.

Has anyone ever thought about making up a lining for the soft top inside to cover all the bars - kind of like a head lining for the soft top i suppose ?

I often look at the hood on my BMW E46 and think it would be great to get a hood that good on the stag and ideally electric as well !
