Fuel tank filler pipe

Hi All

Out of interest, what is the make up of the filler pipe? Is it a rubber tube with a vulcanised wrapping around it? I ask mine feels like its got an outer skin on it in places and was wondering, although I can see any signs, could it be a fuel smell leak? Eveything else is fine, the usual suspects have been checked. I see these tubes for sale and ask myself as to would anyone want to replace one as they are so thick and dont seem to leak, or do they?

i also have fuel smell in the boot, and am thinking it must be the filler pipe.

I am wondering if fuel can leak between layers but gradually vapours somehow. I know when it was last off there seemed to feel like a blister half way up. Will investigate

G'day Andrew.

I have more additional plumbing in the boot because of EFI so put some dye in the system to see where the problem is, with no result, which leaves me with the filler pipe. I must admit to bending it quite severely as I was too lazy to remove the cap assembly once, this may have caused invisible cracks.

I think I may be guilty of that too. Will add it to the winter job list

Mine was leaking from the tank filler area, it took a fair few goes at moving the jubilee clip to get it to seal properly. I think this was down to the hose becoming relatively rigid over time and I'll get round to replacing it sometime to prevent a recurrence.
