If in the unlikely case sound card has blown internally or faulty for any reason then a USB soundcard will be needed and is a good addition also as sound can be far better, just get a pair of pc speakers to go with it...price can vary pending on budget but a good low price one is:

Thanks everyone for your help and advice and especially to Ian Durrant who has just given up over an hour of his Sunday helping me to get to the bottom of the problem.
It seems the fault is to do with the soundcard or speakers themselves.
We have sound working through headsets but that's it, so will probably go for external usb speakers as suggested above.

          Hi Kevin,

If its working with headsets then the sound card is basically working. So it must be a faulty connection. Mind you USB speakers are still the cheapest way to work around it. For some reason the sound card thinks something is plugged into the sub woofer port and I think that means the card thinks it is supposed to be using external speakers and so its isn't routing sound to the built in speakers.

I'm just about to do the same at work. MacBook Air with the funky screen and a big (27") monitor. I don't need fancy graphics or anything special (just normal Office stuff usually) so the Air should work fine.
