    speedometer failed

    Hello everybody,

Yesterday when I was about to the Stag in storage for the winter the speedo suddenly failed. So I will be able to deal with this issue next spring only.

It is an automatic gearbox. So what do you think might be the reason?

    Kind regards,
    Dieter.

    Hi dieter,
I would guess either the speedo cable has detached from the auto transmission or the speedo cable has broken.I. Can't say I have heard of the actuall speedo's packing up but of course that is not to say it can't happen.Lets hope the cable outer has come loose from the auto box or the actuall speedo itself. At least you will have plenty of time over your winter to sort it out.In the meantime us lucky members in the antidotes in NewZealand can enjoy summer motoring with the tops down.Cheers,
    Anthony

      Ditto, most likely the cable.

They are easy to fit, so relax!

The first place I'd check (and the easiest) is the connection to the speedo itself. You can get your hand up behind there fairly easily and they're only finger tight so it may have come unscrewed.

        Cheers

          Hello,

the connection directly behind the speedo is okay.

I will remove the speedo and see whether it works with an other speedocable and an electric drill. I reckon I will have to turn clockwise (seen from the rear of the speedo). Correct?

          Best wishes,
          Dieter.

            Dieter,

You need to turn it the same way as the needle moves. So looking at the back it will be counter-clockwise. I think!

            Cheers,
            Mike.

              Hi Dieter,

I currently have a problem on my car where the speedo head is faulty and the needle doesn't move but it still registers the miles. Take the car for a quick drive to see if it is clocking up the kilometers, that way you will know whether it is the speedo head or the cable.

              Dave.

                Hello Dave,

In my case neither the needle moves nor does the mile counter turn. So ...?

                Kind regards,
                Dieter.

Same problem the Lib Dems have. Cable.

                    Hello Anthony,

Life can be very unfair! While I am here in the SW of Germany preparing for a long winter and falling into my annual depression you are enjoying the sun ...

                    Best wishes,
                    Dieter.

Hi Dieter, I don't want to add to your winter depression but I have the same issue and have not had a speedo for 3 months. Changed the cable and it wasn't that, put a new speedo clock in, it wasn't that. I have now sourced a new 21 tooth worm gear for the gearbox end of the cable but cannot reach this from laying under the car so need to try to arrange the use of a four poster or pit in order to change this out. Good luck with yours.

                      Steve

                        Hello Steve,

Does this "21 tooth worm gear" refer to an automatic BW 35 gearbox, too. Or is this part only for manual gearboxes?

                        Best wishes,
                        Dieter.

Hang on, what about the right angle drive? This was the cause of failure on my MOD, however I have not checked to see of it is present on the auto cars. Is so you need to check it.

Forget that; angle drive is only used on Manual gearbox

Before you begin to get too technical check the inner cable. As others have suggested it is prone to break. When you have the speedo detatched you can pull it out. Length varies but if you get less than about 1.30meters its broken.

Hello Brian and all the other Stag friends,

Thank you all for your hints. In the spring I will tilt the dashboard and detach the speedo cable. If it turns while driving the cable should not be broken. If it is, I will pull the inner cable and replace it by another one .... If it is not, it must be the speedo itself, which I will test with my electric drill.

                              Best wishes,
                              Dieter.
