I have just renewed the retention certificate for one of the Reg numbers we have. Looking at the details to make sure there were no mistakes and I still had the entitlement I noticed this. Body type of previous vehicle assigned to. Nothing else, no make or model. Why!

It may have something to do with where the number can be moved to. Certainly in the early days numbers could be taken from mopeds and tractors and put on cars.

In the early eighties when I was working in Berkshire, a large neighbouring farm had consecutive low number non age related plates scattered over a variety of farm vehicles.

I think the rules were changed later so plates could only be moved between vehicles with the same body type, but I have been known to be talking out of my a**e at times!

A neighbour had the reg 454 POP on his little grey fergy, would have been perfect for a Big Block Chevvy engine Ford Popular!

Maybe Neil, but I bought a private plate for the Bike a couple of years back and in all likelihood that came off a car.

Just guessing but as you are renewing the certificate maybe DVLA regard that it wasn't assigned to a vehicle last, instead to the previous certificate.

You have to send the old one back for the renewal and I didn't look that closely at the last one. When we sold the Peugeot last year we went to the DVLA Wimbledon office as it's on our doorstep and they just put the number on retention and reassigned the car it's original reg No there and then. Shame their closing them all down at the end of the year, they have been very helpful in the past.

As said earlier once you could transfer numbers from anything to anything they then changed it to only vehicles that were subject to mot at some stage during its life ie not fire engines/ tractors as they are exempt. They did stop plates being transferred between cars and bikes but appear to have allowed it again if the donor and recipient are in mot category even lorries and busses. Dave
