I attended my first local SOC meeting last month and it was a real disappointment. I arrived at the pub, but there were no Stags! I then rang the Mrs to confirm that it was the right pub and she confirmed it was. So, I parked up and then found a small group from the club and their spouses who were eating at the pub. They explained that they were off to the Lake district later that week and were conserving fuel because of the Shell tanker drivers action. Eventually, another forum member turned up, and one other Stag. I asked if anyone looked at the forum regularly, but no-one seemed to.
You attend local meets to see Stags and talk Stags, thats what you look forward to, and a meeting with no Stags is a real let down. It was very disappointing too that there was only about 10 owners from the three huge counties, Berks, Bucks and Oxon.
So, eschewing the BBO meet this month, although it was an 80 mile round trip for me, I decided to give an area meeting another try and attended the Surrey meet of the SOC last night - what a contrast!
It was well worth the trip because there was an impressive line up of 17 Stags. There was all sorts, fantastic engine conversions, upgraded interiors, chrome heaven, work in progress to look at, and in some cases, drool over, all Stag life was there.Several forum members, some of whom were also Surrey members also turned up, and once again we could listen to Ian B's amazing exhaust and smirk at Kryten's pink striped shirt. The venue made it, it was ona nice big green in front of the Fairmile pub at Cobham where the Stags could be easily lined up in an impressive multicoloured row. Ihad an enjoyable evening.
The Surrey area coordinator Carl Fuss should be congratulated, particularly on the excellent choice of venue which enabled everyone to see the Stags and have a great time. I think the BB&O group, who were very welcoming, could learn from this and attend in their Stags, choose a more central, and more suitable venue to attract more members to the meetings.
