    removing head (Stag of course!)

    Hello everybody,

So far I have read and heard many tips about how to remove a sticking cylinder head.

In issue no. 5 of "TR-Information" (German TR-Register) there was another one by Peter Douglas Winn (Munich):

"... Remove all the studs going through the head. Then remove the plugs and push some cord down the holes. Afterwards use the starter motor and turn the engine over. The head will now separate from the block."

Do you think this will work? Has anybody tried this before?

    Kind regards,
    Dieter.

Hi Dieter, I know Drew has looked at it. If you search rope or rope trick on here you should find something
Paul - 3 projects, 1 breaker - garage built and housing 2 white Stags. One runs, one doesn't

      Hi Dieter,

If you look at Drew's comprehensive head removal advice (pdf file) in the technical section on here he details several ways, including the rope trick.

      Cheers

A really good write up of the "Rope Method" by Glenn Merrell is here:

First you have to remove the studs and that is the difficult bit. With the studs removed there is only 'Stiction' & gunge holding the parts together.

            Hi,

Don't try rope in the bores unless you can get the studs out, because the Stag studs go through the head at an angle you will do serious damage to something. The difficult bit with getting Stag heads off is getting the studs out over time they can corrode the passageways in the head and the two lock together. Been there ... Not fun.

I thought that was the whole purpose of the rope method, you can't get the studs out as they've been sheared or something equally horrible and you need to raise the heads just enough so you can cut the through the studs. If the studs are out there's very little keeping the heads on so the rope trick isn't necessary.

Mine you I've never tried it and using the triple lock nut method has always loosed the studs enough to free the head

I have used the rope trick - worked successfully for me, covered it on a thread here with photos a few years ago - i preferred to use a little bit of 'feel' so I used a breaker-bar on the crankshaft pulley rather than the starter motor.
