    Exhaust mounting rubbers

It's been almost 15 years since I fitted the exhaust to my Stag, I thought I would change the rear mounting rubbers as they were beginning to look tired and perished - wish I had left well alone now. Got the old ones off (hacksaw through rubber) but am struggling to get the new ones on, lots of levering with screwdrivers eventually got two on but split two new ones (only had one spare so have ordered more). Is there an easy way to fit these? Should I be fitting the body or the exhaust end first?

One option that may help is to unbolt the tail pipes and fit the mounting rubbers during re-assembly. Andrew

Put them in hot water, then use a silicon spray. I find that helps. Good luck. Graham

        Peter,

I've tried Andrew's suggestion before with no luck. I found the best way was to fix the rubbers onto the exhaust first, but only about 2/3 or 3/4 on. I then slid a screwdriver through the upper hole in the rubber that the body mount goes through and then lifted the screwdriver tip onto the end of the body mount. I was then able to slide the rubber along the shaft of the screwdriver and onto the body mount. Then I simply pushed the rubbers fully home on the exhaust bracket.

        Hope this helps.

I've flattened the hooked ends slightly - not easy because of their dished shape but easier than fighting to get the mountings on. When they're flatter, it is easier to get the rubber over both.

Because the two brackets point in opposite directions there seems to be no likelihood of things ever falling off.

          Cheers

Peter at LD Parts seems to think most of the available rubbers are too hard. He sells some softer ones which might be easier to fit.

I still have the original type on mine and the rubber is quite soft and stretchy.

I have a much easier solution. When I bought the car one of the hangers had broken off the boot floor. So I made up a plate with hangers attached, then bolted the plate to the boot floor. Now I just undo bolts to release the tail pipes.
