    How much to replace the timing chains

    The final job to get My 77 Stag sorted is the timing chains as it now shows 50,800 miles the PO gave me a set of chains but I will obtain a set of German ones . Although my garage says there is no rattle from them when starting up and said not to worry yet as long as I keep it serviced regularly and keep an eye on them unusual to talk themselves out of work but I do trust the guy.
    I was just wondering if it is an expensive job, and what should be a fair price to do the job I will buy the chains and tensioner kit . There is a Triumph garage at Elmswell in Suffok about 35 miles from me " Manvers Triumph". has anyone used them ? I was thinking of ringing them to get a quote and get one from my local classic car garage. they said they have done them before . I think I am getting the Stag paranoia

    I woukd have thought it was a days labour. If you know your garages rates then base it on 8 hours for labour tops. I,m not in the trade and this is based on how long I think I would take. Also giving no other surprises come up , helicoiling and so on.
    Hope this helps or bumps it so someone has maybe paid to have this operation done.

      The official Triumph 'book' time was 4.95 hours, however I agree with Edd that 8 hours wouldn't seem unreasonable.

      The important thing though is to ensure that whoever does it, really does know how to do it properly.

        I do them based on 5 hours, including all sprockets changed. If the new upper LH bank chain guide is twisted then it may be another half hour getting it to fit straight. Did my last set three weeks ago.

          Thanks lads that's given me a guide to work on. I assume there is no way of finding out if they are worn without taking the cover off or listening for a rattle .
          Kryton you mentioned changing the sprockets as well is this a good standard idea while you have access or were yours worn ?

            Russ repairs Stags (among others) I don't think he was referring to his own car

              It's certainly a good idea to have a set of sprockets to hand in case the teeth are "hooked" and cause accelerated wear on the new chains - as the set of sprockets is only £50 often people opt just to change them at the same time.

              Graham was spot on with his observation too... He knows me too well - so I'll be seeing you in a couple of weeks then to check those wheels out mate?
