Track rod arm cotter pins

Hi all,
Question.... The ROM indicates cotter pins are used on the track rod arm ends, but none were on the old ones removed, or on the new ones we obtained. Do we care?

Some track rod ends came with castellated nuts, a hole in the threaded part and split (cotter) pins. For many years now they have come with nyloc nuts. If you have those, then cotter pins aren't needed.

When you say 'cotter pins' I guess you're referring to split pins?

If so, castellated nuts with a split pin through a hole through the bolt, or pin were used in quite a few places.

Latterly these were often superceded by nyloc nuts. I think this was the case with track rod ends.

However, nylocs should really be replaced with new ones every time they are undone.

Cotter pins and split pins are two names for the same thing. Use nyloc nuts instead of castellated. As already said always replace nylocs if disturbed. Bent beam nuts are a superior option but I don't believe they are available in non metric sizes unfortunately.
