    squeaky alternater

    and squeaks more when you turn the lights on, am i ignoring at my peril? can i lube it?

    i am planning on the move to the top left side and leave the old one in place till the engine or steering may need work, any advice gratefully recieved.

      If you are lucky, it maybe belt slip, or the diode pack is on the way out. I moved my alternator over, there are at least 2 sorts of brackets. One is Y shaped but you have to use the existing adjuster bracket, packed out with washers. I could never get a good straight belt run. The other is Tony Hart's which fits perfectly. Either sort uses the power steering belt. The Y shaped bracket came with a basic loom to run the wiring across the front of the engine. I was not happy using this in case the insulation wore through. I made a new loom which runs along the N/S inner wing, across the bulkhead to connect at the junction box on O/S wing. Yours will be slightly different as Mk1.

        The pulley surfaces are too highly polished, so they are slipping slightly and squeaking- you can try a squirt of silicone rubber lubricant - that will work briefly, but the best solution is to replace the alternator pulley and give it a new belt at the same time..... roughening the pulley surface seldom works for some reason.....

              Well, I suppose mine will be a bit of a deviant in the next couple of months (no gimp suit comments please...).....ZF transmission, electric cooling system, non standard leather interior, BMW servo and master,205 tyres........

              If the mod is good, then why not? We're just evolving the Stag as it would have done if BL had put the money into it...........

                stereo? well i have got an old one but would cause mutiny if i changed it.:X
