Trying not to break it before I use it.

Hi. Can some one advise me on my fuel tank. I am not looking to remove it, just get under it to retrieve a lost wheel nut. Can I safely remove the front 2 bolts securing the tank and lift it up a couple of cm's to get my hand under it? Or am I in danger of bending something I shouldn't. Would I need to remove all 4 nuts and take the tank out completely? Someone will have done this already and know what the tolerance will be on the pipes at the back of the tank.
    Your thoughts and comments welcomed.
    cheers

Hi Jonathon, I have had the tank out of my stag and it's not to hard. However what I would do to get the wheel nut out from under the tank is loosen off the four securing bolts and lift the tank up a bit. Then use a telescopic magnet and retrieve the nut.Good luck

My tank's out at the moment.

I agree that you should remove all four bolts, otherwise you risk bending one of the 'ears' of the tank where the bolts go through.

This will probably give you enough room to find it.

Hands up all those who've removed a tank and NOT found something interesting/unusual under there ? I found a 5/16 AF spanner which was the only one missing from my set - the odd thing is that the one I found definitely wasn't mine

          Cheers

Lifting the fuel tank at the front a little is mot going to damage the fuel tank pipes at the back / rear of the tank is it. Just worried I may cause them to leak i doi g this thats all?

Not so with the steel wheels - or even with the after-market alloy wheel look-alike nuts! (Which I have).

I guess it depends on how far under your nut has gone but, with all four bolts out (or two out and the other two loosened several threads) then you should get a fair bit of movement. Having said that, I think I'd remove the large jubilee clip around the base of the filler pipe where it goes into the tank.

                Good luck.

                Cheers
