Depends how long its been a non-runner, but rubber degrades so things like bushes and tyres tend to perish and are easy to spot. You mention brakes, and hoses have the same problem as do fuel lines.Electrical things also tend to suffer and once its back on the road, be prepared for a few intermittent failures.

Some of what you need to do will depend on how long its stood and in what conditions. Damp will kill most normally open electrical contacts (door light switches for one) if the points happened to be open which is most likely they will need to be changed. Damp can also get into all sorts of places like inlet manifolds and if its damp enough the open valves can stick that way. A good idea is to remove the plugs.... you will want to replace them anyway, turn the engine by hand to make sure all is as it should be prior to changing the oil and before cranking it with the starter. you will want to see oil pressure light go out very quickly Then you can put the plugs back and try to start it if everything else is ok.
