    Head bolts torque setting

A quick questionas i dont have access to the Haynes manual. What are the torque values for the head bolts?

My car is going for an MOT, i thought i might just get them to check the head bolts as it was removed last year.

      Hi

The torque values for the head bolts/studs are55lbs. If you are going to re-torque them you need to slacken each bolt/stud 1/4 of a turn then re-torque them down. Do one bolt/stud at a time and follow the sequence in the workshop/Haynes manual.

But if the engine is running well I wouldnot re-torque the heads after a year you could snap a stud!!

      Regards

Good tip that Ian! I could always say it's my Alternative Michelin Man outfit....... or some heavy duty overalls.....

Right, I'm back from the first MOT of the 2 booked this week, this oneon the wife's Honda, passed after having a sidelight bulb (was working yesterday) fitted - not bad after 18 years....

Tomorrow the Snag goes in - if I get time to fit the track rod ends before the test at 11.30 that is.....

I've already told the tester I'm coming armed with my carb tools ready for the gas analyser phase - just in case

You are corect regarding the manuel settings at 55lbs but I was told by E J Ward that they torque their heads up to 65 - 67lbs. Thats what I did mine to without an issue.

2nd bit of Stag related good news for methis week! The first being my insurance premium going down by 45% without me even shopping around for a new quote!

The 2nd - MOT pass, the only failure was the NS lamp aim being to high. About time the old girl paid me back after bleeding me dry last year!

Crypton Gas levels - I have no idea if these are good for a Stag or not, but they seem to be within the limits

                      CO Level 0.54%

                      HC Level 174ppm

Maybe i can now afford to change the susspension, or the Walnut dash!

PS Thanks to Martin from the listfor recommending Alpat motors again, a real no-nonsense cheap garage that don't pi$$ you about.

                        Hi Claral

Your C.O. is a bit weak, Try to get it up to 2.5 if you can. (should run between 2.5-4.5) I'm struggling to get mine over 1.10 at the moment.

I pull the head bolts/studs down to 55lbs initially then down to 60lbs.

Thanks, i am reasonably handy with a pair of spanners - but to adjust to CO levels, i would have no idea!! Nor the tools to measure it.

I assume i need to make the carbs run a bit richer, or maybeleaner, i remember playing with the single carbs on my old two stroke bikes, but i think i would leave twin carbs to an expert. (two stroke carb adjustment is easy - turn it one way and see if you go faster, if not, turn the screw back the other way and do another speed test!. Repeat until you squeeze every last mph out it!)

You are better off telling me if i am doing any harm running with a low CO level, that might make me take it to a garage for a carb tune!

                            Thanks for the advice

mmmmm........you are wellbelow the ideal stoichemetric ratio, which can lead to the charge actually still burning as it leaves the cylinder on the exhaust stroke to the detriment of exhaust valves and seats - only lean-burn engines should be run under 1% and neither the RV8 or the Stag lump are lean-burn.............

This can lead to problems and expense, so I would agree that it should go to at least 2.5% - I will try and beat your CO reading just on that basis of fun, for the test only.... it'll be richened up after without a doubt as I like my engine too much
