    Tool of the year

No, the title is not a self description

I've just bought myself some new spanners that luckily arrived at, literally, the critical moment as I was under my car trying to tighten the front prop shaft bolts which was made harder by the fact that the back end of the car was up high, meaning the front was low. I was having fun and games as I heard the postman with my new spanners.

So, what is so special about these ? Well, they're open ended imperial ratchet spanners and they are BRILLIANT

I was a little sceptical at first but, despite their rather high price, I'd ordered a set, taking advantage of a discount in one of the classic car magazines.

I'd definitely encourage anyone to put them on their Christmas list (and I have absolutely no connection) http://www.chicagobrand.co.uk/

    Cheers

    Julian

I usually never final tighten with open end but in awkward places sometimes there is no choice. I used a ring type ratchet the other day and found it really handy. Looks as though they have a little crank in the end too which is useful as it clears what your working on.

I bought the Imperial/SAE 8 spanner set of Aldenwrenches.

They seem much cheaper in USA, I don't know how much discount the magazine offer gave. In USA the 3 set is £22.50 and the 8 set is £45,
I bought mine on Amazon US.

              They cost £45 plus £7.50 p&p and £10.50 import duty; total £63.50
              [3 set is £22.75 plus $5.65 p&p and £5.70 import duty; total £34 ]
The duty is prepaid so you don't get stung by the £10+ handling charge on top from the post office etc.
I thought the postage was really reasonable, and I'll have to check out Amazon US more regularily.

              Dave.

I have to say that reading the thread title made a couple of members spring straight to mind Julian, but you weren't one of them.

And here we are trying to remain positive what a silly comment.

I'm afraid I regard them as the "Devils Tools". I know 2 people with them who have rounded off the corners on HEADS of bolts, the ratcheting clasp action is abrasive as it travels over the corners. Everybody to their own choice and I wish you luck with them.

                      Hi Micky,

I know exactly what you mean and you'll have noticed that I did say I was sceptical at first.

I would never use them where I can use a proper ring spanner or socket, however, from my little bit of experience so far, they are a hundred times better than an open ended spanner, especially in a confined space and as we seem to have quite a few fixings in confined spaces on a Stag, I'm more than happy to use them where necessary.

I too was concerned about the rounding off of corners however I have looked closely at all the places where I've used them and I can detect no appreciable rounding off - unlike where I was having to use an open ended spanner before.

                      Cheers

                      Julian

Sorry, but posted with intention of humour in the expectation that the forum can still laugh at itself. Did so via phone and smiley at end seems not to have come through, so maybe not making it read as intended. No offence intended.

No offence here. It's the type of intended humour that is wrong. When you disguise the intended tool gesture to a unknown member he or she will take offence where as if I call some good friends on here a plonker or wally it will be taken in good jest as they know I think the world of them. I'm not a fan of calling anyone a tool. Sometimes a spontaneous reply doesn't sound so good the next day.
