    Stub axle wear

    Hi guys .
Been working on my suspension at the weekend and couldn't get a bolt out of my vertical link , I decided to ask the garage that looks after my stepsons car to see if they could remove it. They have got it out for me and done it for free so that's a result but the mechanic said that he thought my stub axle "was knackered" ! My car passed its MOT in July there is no noise or vibration and looking on the brothers website my stub axle looks the same as their used one . The two lads that own this garage are only in their early 30's so aren't Stag experts in fact my part is probably older than them . My question is how can I tell if it is worn ?
Does anyone know anyone who does uprated stub axles ? Monarch do them but you have to sign a disclaimer and that makes me wonder why .
    Thanks Steve

    Hi Steve,

I had to replace one of mine a couple of months ago after a ridge wore on it - I could not adjust the bearing properly. I replaced it with a standard one from JP which has been fine so far. I'm not an expert but I could see and feel a depression where the stub axle had worn and the bearing has stayed adjusted properly so far on the new one.

As long as you can adjust the bearing Ok and it stays in adjustment, then I'd say the stub axle was OK.

If the old one has lasted 40 years, there is no reason why a new (OE) part shouldn't last the same again. However, how do we know we're getting OE quality parts these days?

      Cheers,
      Mike.

        Thanks guys
I think I'll put it back together and see what happens . The car is going in the body shop for a re spray soon so I need to get it moving again pronto .
Chris Wittor has got some with the BL box so I assume they are OE but I believe that the 2000/2500 had a different stub axle ,the Stag one was harder .
The 2000/2500 will fit and I guess any that are left are going to be saloon ones . Does the stub axle come out ok or is it best to let a engineering shop get it out ?
        Cheers

Undo the nut, clamp the whole lot in a vice and hit it hard with a hammer. It should come out!

Are the saloon ones different? Except the brake bits, everything else on the front suspension is the same. I'll have to go and check in the parts books.

          Cheers,
          Mike.

I don't know for certain but I Googled the Stag stub axle and it came up that the Stag one was harder on the inside than the 2000/2500 and that the Stag ones were now like hens teeth and so you were most likely get a saloon one and that you were better off using a good second hand Stag one .(How do you know what your second hand one has come off) I know you shouldn't believe everything you read on the internet but I just don't know and that is why I thought about fitting a more modern upgraded one .
I haven't got a choice really so I'm going have to order one and fit it.
            Thanks Steve

If the stub axle is "knackered" because the inner bearing isnt tight on the stub axle so that you have wheel bearing play, dont forget the bearing modification kit that clamps the bearings onto the stub axle and that might cure any problem.

                Nambo .
Where can I get this "bearing modification kit" I have looked on web and can't find it .
I have removed the old stub axle today and was very surprised how easily it came out . I found a wheel bearing set that I had forgotten about as well ,maybe my luck is changing Just waiting for the new stub axle to be delivered and the jobs a good un .
