    Helping out with parts

Most of the time I don't mind trudging down to the garage in the wet and cold to see if I have a spare part for someone in need..and they are usually grateful..

Recently I have done this a couple of times for people supposedly desperate for an item only to find that they have found one somewhere else
or that they don't want it.. and not even a "thanks anyway"..

I have a lot of Stag spares that I have bought or collected over the years.
I don't need them all any more and I am quite happy to pass them on usually for less than I paid for them,or at a sensible price to help someone out..
Its getting to a point where I probably won't bother anymore..

Don't want a lot out of life, but a thank you (in my book) goes a long way

Don't despair Sam, there are still folk out there who know when a polite "thank you" is appropriate.

But I agree, there also unfortunately those who don't.....................

You are absolutely right Sam but I think luckily its restricted to just a few. (once bitten twice shy) comes to mind. Please dont give up on the good guys because the club needs members like you. I remeber (through Julian) you finding a prop for me I was'nt able to take you up on your generous offer as I was at the wrong end of the country, and I did thank you at the time (be it through Julian) Helping each other out makes this Club work and long may it continue. Manners cost nothing.

          Just looked it up...Quite..

Russ you very kindly gave me a seat back and on that occasion all you wanted was a thank-you..
Instead I think I grovelled, bowed and scraped..but that works as well..

That's going to get the "jungle drums" going. No one will have a clue what the washing machine thing is about...Keep em guessing..

I think that, by and large, this forum is one of the most polite that I belong to but, yes it is frustrating when things like you say occur Sam, or you give answers / help in a thread and the person who asks doesn't even bother to say thank you.

Politeness goes a long way in life, but seems not to matter to a growing number of people. I experience a severe lack of manners frequently in my business, where after meeting prospective new clients in their home and spending an hour or two giving free advice, they don't bother to respond to the quote that I then send them. If I chase it, I get either ignored or given some old pony that they haven't talked about it yet, or are now going to buy a boat rather than alter their house.

As Russ says, Non illegitemis carborundum!

Russ, you really are a font of all knowledge. Thanks for that, I'm sure I'll be able to drop that into a conversation at work somewhere along the line .

Chin up old chap I too spend lots of time on things with not much thanks. However sometimes when you do get thanks it makes the rest seem worthwhile. I recently visited a customer who just had a builder charge £500 for a repair. The roof was left in a shocking state with literally holes as big as your fist through to daylight. When question the builder said well I didn't quote for that bit when the tile could have been replace inches from where he bodged another part. He took all of three hours to complete the work. Her ceilings were beginning to bow due to the water pouring in so me and my lad got our ladders from the workshop together with my stock of old roman tiles and replaced 10 broken tiles. Ok she needs a new roof to be honest but this repair will buy her time. So what do i charge. She is 89 just been ripped off and its taken an hour of my time. This one is on me I said. I also called my daughter and reported it too Bristol care and repair she had already registered but they then knew how serious it was. She give me a lovely hug and was pleased. Two days later her grand daughter was at the door with a box of chocolates and a bottle if wine. How lovely

Edd, well done. Seems there is a queue of lowlifes ready to rip off the oldies, I am constantly looking out for my dear old Ma, a similar age, who seems to have totally lost the ability to spot a ripoff at two paces.

And it's not just old folk. Another job I recently went to was a retired Bt engineer. He is about 60 ( I don't class that as old as I get nearer to it ) I recently finished some exterior building work. Had to fix three previous builder botch ups things like constantly rendering over bath stone what numptees.
He sounded distressed so I called round. He just had double glazing fitted. They were due to come back. The finish was awful. Great big plastic cladding on the inside. Tilt and turn windows. They only open inwards hence opening across two beds where you sit. One guy even cut round a blind bracket with cladding rather than take it off and screw it on top. For this 5 windows he paid £5k made up of three small windows and two average. I said do the math. A grand a window no way. He looked gutted. He had signed a very poorly looking contract showing the window positions but no mention of tilt and turn. The outcome was them changing the design of two of the windows and I'm still not sure if he resolved it completely. I will see him soon. On leaving his wife a teacher got her purse out and said now come on Eddie you been here for two hours how much do we owe you. Such kindness after being ripped off. It's ok I said just keep in touch.
The building trade is one if the worst it's no different to robbing someone yet the law does nothing.
