Cheers for your replies. Today the situation has got worse as I have received an email from the insurance company asking for an additional 120quid and telling me that my no claims bonus has reduced from 14 to 13 years. Now for the past six years I have paid an additional amount for "protected no claims" What this appears to mean is that here is an additional premium to protect your no claims bonus which actually means "F**k All" we will charge you and reduce your no claims bonus in the event of a claim but thank you for the additional premiums to prevent this over the last few years. Interestingly, they have managed to reduce my multicar policy by 126quid due to my phone call since they were overcharging by that amount in the first place. The cost is not the issue here, its the principal that I have been paying for something for the past six years that I am not actually going to receive in the event of a claim. They want to reduce my no claims bonus from 14 years to 11years and effectively increase my renewal premium by over 20% so what have I been paying for? Can someone please explain what "protected no claims" actually means.

    thanks in advance Steve

      Who is the insurer Steve?
(I suspect as you have a multicar policy it may be the chaps that dress up in old tunics...?)
If you have a protected NCD they cannot increase your premiums as a result of a claim - I would suggest you make noises that you intend to make a complaint over the way they have handled this.
Also, as they have been overcharging you ask them for a full calculation of how they arrived at the premium you have paid since being with them and demand the overpayment back for the respective period - they have admitted they've done it so you have nothing to lose.

Hope this helps but don't let them get away with it - i'm an insurance broker so I know a few of the tricks these companies play!

      Cheers!
      Mike
