    A couple of questions

Hi everyone, I've just brought a 1973 mk2 in french blue, i'ts been of the road for 5 years and I'vestarted recommisioning it. My other car is a mk1 GT6 and I've been amazed at how much more complex the Stag is so I need a bit of help.

    1. The petrol overflow pipes were terminated in the 2 connectors on the bottom of the air box thermic valve, from what I can gather this is wrong, they should go into a `t' piece but I dont know where to terminate the pipe from the `t' piece, does it just dangle towards the floor or has it got a proper place to go?

    2. The airbox thermic valve has 2 connectors on the bottom, I think a hosegoes to thetop of the airbox from 1, does anything attach to the other, or is it left empty?

    3. My fan spins freely when the engine is off and the radiator has a score mark in it from the fan, am I right in assuming the fan shouldnt spin and the mark in the radiator is from the blades bending as there speed isnt regulated by the viscous fan? If so is there anything to fix on the viscous assembly or is it a throw away and buy a new one job.

That's it for now but I'm sure I'll be back with many more questions,

    Thanks,

    Floyd.

    Hi Floyd

The petrol overflow pipe should go intoa T peice then under the airbox, from there a smaller pipe runs down the front of the timing chain casing on the drivers side next to the alternator.

There should be a pipe from the carbs the the other connection under the airbox otherwise it won't work.

Hold the fan spin if it does not stop in 1/4 -1/2 a turn the viscous is shot and needs replacing ASAP!

    Hope this helps.

      Welcome Floyd

You'll get lots of support and answers here... its the only way i learnt when I got a Stag.

      Re your questions:

My petrol overflow just exits via another tube to the ground... must check if that's right

There was originally a 2ndflexible leading from under the airbox to a short piece of steel tubing about4 inches behind the airbox (from memory)

Fan should not turn freely when you whizz it by hand.. I would say no more than half revolution. Some people fix them but yes reallyit is a throw away part.

I will no doubt be corrected by the experts and have the p**s taken out of me but thats what this forum is all about. Just thought I'd get in first for once....mind you probably missed that the speed I type

Stuart, you say "There should be a pipe from the carbs the the other connection under the airbox otherwise it won't work" do you know where on the carbs it comes from ? There'sa short length of tube thats been blanked of on the front ofmy carb pedestal, is that the spot? the tube is 149844 on the diagram.

            Cheers,

            Floyd.

Hi Bruce.... no its my sisters and its really nice. Can't have anything of my own without her copying. She picked it up last year. Had spent most of its life in Jersey so consequently has only done about 28000 miles and is very original

                  Have you started thetransplant yet?

                    Hi David

I imagined that a car from Jersey would be a rot box because of the close porximity to the salt laden sea air. Obviously I was wrong

Yes, work has commenced. Seats, carpets, interior trim, soft top and cover, dashboard, glove box, centre console all out on the new car. Heater matrix is next on the list followed by a good wash of the bodywork so as to inspect the paintwork. Rain has stopped play at the moment because as soon as I pulled the car out of the garage and put the washing out on the line it started to rain:?

                    Cheers

Now theres a issue for all our south coast friends to consider.

Actually its spotless.... she had it MOTed last month and the tester was gobsmacked ..said it was like working on a 4 year old car.

Weathers picking up later so you should be ok...good luck

                        Floyd

                        Fan marks on rad.

Sounds like the engine is moving forward during heavy braking. Mine did this and it was sugested I change the g/box and engine mounts.

There used to be a yellow Stag in Bergerac, could this be the car?? I presume most of the programme was actually filmed on Jersey.

That's interesting ... would give her car a bit of added character if it was the one. However I'm now wondering if she said Guernsey!!

A few Stags were brought back from Jersey during the 'classic boom'. I recall one Pimento red one thatwas broughtinto Devon in 1990by a garage that specialised in selling ex-Jersey rental cars. It was stripped on its return, photographic evidence of NO rust, re-sprayed and sold for over £20k. It subsequently went to an owner who spared no expense. Heads done, new chrome all round (even though the existing chrome would have outshone most Stags), etc., etc.

At one stage it changed hands again at around £27k.

Last I heard of it a few years later during the 'bust', it was being sold 'to the best offer'. Iheard it reached about £9.5K.

There will be one going the other way next week when SWMBO and I go across from Poole for a week taking the Stag with us.
