    magnet inside steering servo

    Hello everbody,

when I dismantled the steering servo to refurbish it, a flat, round magnet fell out. Where does it go back to? I guess into the dish-type recess in the end plate, which sits spring-loaded in front of the rotor hub. Correct?

Is this magnet supposed to filter out any metal bits in the steering fluid?

    Best wishes,
    Dieter.

Dieter, do you mean the Steering Pump? If so, I have just overhauled mine and the procedure was exactly as in the ROM and there was no magnet in it.

      Good morning Drew,

Yes, I mean the steering pump. I am overhauling three of them at the moment, which is a bit tricky - e.g. as you can fit the spring-loaded end plate easily the wrong way round.

In all three pumps there were flat, round magnets. Such magnets were part of the service kits as well.

I found out that they sit at the side of rotor housing.

      How is your Stag project?

      Best wishes,
      Dieter.

        Hi Dieter,

When I rebuilt my pump I found that magnet as well. I don't quite remember where it went - slightly domed section at the end of the reservoir ?? but I'm sure it is to, as you say, just collect any swarf that may build up.

        Cheers

        Julian

Yes, in the kit was a magnet but, if I recall correctly, there was something about the kit being for different pump models. Maybe Julian's idea is correct. Let me know as I haven't filled my pump yet and could pop the magnet in if it belongs there! Nothing in any of the manuals about it though and it's not in the parts handbook either.

I can't understand the bit that the domed plate can go in two ways. When I assembled my pump I found that the domed bit goes in one way only and that was bloody difficult to compress the spring. The other way wouldn't work at all. The ROM is VERY good and, for once, it seemed to describe everything in perfect detail.

Here's a quote from LD Parts:
Power Steering pump overhaul kit. Because this item suits Nissan and Jaguar as well it has some parts included you will not need for Stag.
This item will respond to a search on 518565 because of a mistake in the BL Parts Catalogue. It also is known as 518564A and 518564J

            Good morning, Drew,

I wrote this question on the forum when I had just dismantled the first of the three steering pumps. When I dismantled the other two I found magnets sitting at the side of the rotor housing.
As you wrote the ROM does not mention them, but inside the pump they cannot do any harm - even if they were not there originally. I am even contemplating fitting flat, round "high power" magnets (50x5mm). But maybe this affects the rotor blades by pulling them strongly to one side. The latter fall out quite easily by the way. I learnt this the hard way, too.

I am afraid it was quite easy to fit the end plate the wrong was round. But then the spring was not really compressed.

            Good luck,
            Dieter.

That sounds like one of the 'famous last quotes' like "Of course there's water in the pool"

You are right about the dished plate. It was not possible to keep it in place with the spring circlip when it is wrong if I recall correctly now.

Mine had a magnet in it. At the bottom of the tank so was obviously put in there before the tank was put on the pump. Mmmmm when I had finished reassembling the pump I found the magnet on my bench! I just dropped it in the top and poked it as far down the pump as I could reah. Being magnetic it doesn't mind staying at the top where it drops but it doesn't do any good there. I think the idea is that it collects debris b from the vanes and pressure plates that is in the oil. But that debris will obviously fall to the bottom of the oil tank so my magnet wont work as well as it was planned.
