    Gear box advice needed please

Hi all, I have been offerred a know to be good gearbox at a good price to replace my worn out one, the car is manual with o/d BUT the replacement gear box is manual WITHOUT O/D .Question, can I unbolt my o/d and bolt it straight on to the other bearbox, or are there differences in the output shaft? I know on my spitfire I had to swap the output shaft as it was longer on the o/d type.

thanks in advance for any help offerred

Derek, Rimmers list the Non OD gearbox and the OD gearbox as 2 different items and you are right the mainshafts are different. You can see here. Sorry doesn't look like a straightforward jog, new mainshafts are available at about £125

Also there were only a relativley few non overdrive manual stags.

May be the gearbox offered is from a saloon.

IIRC the saloon release mechanism has differences too.

Thanks for the quick replies. looks as if it may be simpler to rebuild the existing gear box, the non o/d box is definitley from a stag, it was removed complete with bell housing, clutch and prop shaft to convert it to auto .

          thanks again, derek

They did exist - the '72 Stag I bought in 1996 had a non-overdrive box. It was original, there is no O on the end of the commission number.
I have replaced it with an overdrive box, but that was a complete swap.

I have just done this conversion with the gearbox from my project Stag, an early 4 speed. In my case I had a J type overdrive, but whatever happens you will need to totally strip the box to fit the overdrive mainshaft, so unless you have knackered expensive bits in your worn out box it would be as simple to rebuild that
