I woukd think you need to uprate every thing else when turning a 40 year old cruiser into a high Performance , high torque car. Brakes. Transmission. Diff. Prop. Tunnel. Mountings. Rear suspension to allow for wider tyres to lay down the traction. Will the existing loom be effected and after all that expense a non standard car don't usually fetch the same money. I would plan the whole project before jumping in and changing the power plant as so many projects just get out of hand. Keep us posted on your project as its so interesting and another level up of skill fitting non standard items. Good luck.

Thanks Edd for being the voice of reason!

Yes, keeping it fairly original is my primary plan, as the car is in a reasonable condition and doesn't seem (so far at least) to require any welding, and all the technical bits are in a reasonable condition, except for the engine. I'm hoping the engine will be relatively "easy" to breath some life into again and I can get it back on the road for next summer. With some luck all it'll need is some new bearings and seals and suchlike without any major machining, but if all it's good for is to turn it into a rather heavy coffee table stand then I'll need to re-evaluate the situation and perhaps go the whole hog and turn it into "Stagus" instead....

Anyhow, as soon as I'm finished with the dismantling and starting to do something resembling restoration work I'll be posting a few photos and comments. Fingers crossed it won't throw any overly nasty surprises my way...

Many thanks to everybody for your comments and suggestions, they're all very much appreciated.

        Cheers,
        Joakim

PS. I arrived in Stockholm this afternoon, a little chillier here than the almost balmy Dublin! Only staying a few days with work, so planning on spending some time again with my Stag next weekend. Well, that's the plan anyway...

What about a JAG 3.8/4.2 engine keeps it BL and British

I like the idea of using a Jag engine, but personally I think if I'll eventually go through the trouble of fitting a non-standard engine with all the mods required then reliability, price and power are quite important. This is where the Lexus setup seem to win hands down.

If money was no object though, perhaps fitting a tuned XK engine in a Stag would be än interesting exercise in what could've been a solution at the time...

The Xk and XKR 4.2 engines were on my list but they too have their reliability issues to. Most should have be recalled as they have a liner problems, among others faults.

That is old news. The Nikasil bore issues are long gone, and in fact, now that low sulphur fuel is the norm, Any surviving Nikasil engines are actually better than their replacements! Once you have the timing chain tensioners sorted to the very latest spec (took them 3 goes to get it right, and they did that by the time the 4.2 superceded the 4.0 V8) those engines are pretty bulletproof. Never heard of a steel-linered engine with cylinder liner issues? Unless of course they start to fail when seriously tuned?

Just too wide for most other engine bays.
Header tanks - you can't beat a bit of bling.
