    Carb Overhaul Kit

I seem to have gained a fuel leak today going to the national day from the pedestal and the side of the RH carb.

What i want to know is has anyone bought the overhaul kit from paddocks and does it included the pedeatal O ring and everthing else I need?

    Hi Stuart,

Looks like the national day went well.

I recently bought a carb overhaul kit from Paddocks and yes it does have the pedestal o ring included. Also diaphragms, needle valves and various other o rings and gaskets.

    Hope this helps.

BTW the hardtop windows turned up the other day - I sent you a PM - Thanks.

    Regards,

    Al.

Stuart, thanks for sorting the forum parking, again, good to see you and chat. Is your carb just leaking from the "bung" underneath. I had to replace o rings on these!

        Hi Jason

No it is definitely leak from the O ring on the pedestal and from the drivers side float chamber gasket and the starter (see pic).

I might just order these items plus the o ring for the dashpots as £52 (paddocks) or £70+ (rimmers):shock:for the overhaul kit is a lot of money for a load of parts I won't necessarily use!:?

          Hi Stu.

All these kits seem to have parts left over at the end of the job. I did mine recently and bought from Ldparts. As usual, loads of gaskets left over, but the kit has the correct float chamber valves. Plus the usual good service from Peter. Doesn't include new needles/jets, but they rarely need changing anyway.

He lists the carb gasket kit:

the Service kit (which is what I used):

          and the pedestal o-ring:

Thanks Dave I have ordered a service kit plus an O ring so I will see if this cures my problem?

My drivers side carb leaks from the starter (choke) as well. There is not a gasket under this and the starter dos'nt appear to be available any where. I'd be interested to know if any thing in the kit cures the leak from it.

I've had fuel leaks from 2 different places on the carbs. This first leak was asticking float chamber needle valve. A new one didn't last long so I fitted the Grose valve which is rated to be the most reliable. My other leak was the " O " ring in the base of carb. bowl. I found that the the age of the plastic plug plus the high ambient temperature the plastic plug itself loses its grip in the hole. You may have to replace this plug as well as the" O " rings.

                  MB,

There is a gasket for the starter in the service kit. If you click on the link for the service kit in my post about Ldparts, it is the gasket right in the centre of the picture.

I can see a gasket in the kit that looks the right shape, but there is not one on either of my carbs . Should there be a gasket as there’s not one shown in the drawing. I did refurb my carbs a long time ago and I’m sure I would have put one on if there had been one there originally. The passenger side carb doesn’t leak and there isn’t a gasket on that side and LD states the kit is for a Land Rover/Range Rover.

So the question is, was there a gaskets under the starters originally?

                      MB,

Peter Howells won't sell anything that is not fit for the Stag. He states if anything that is not OE, and it will have been tested on his own Stag which has done nearly 200,000 miles.

What he says in the description for the kit is: "It also contains gaskets for other shaped carburettors and inlet tracts which we leave in the pack in case you use it on a Land Rover or Range Rover"

That is because all Zenith Stromberg CD carbs are basicallythe same with many different variations for different applications. The kits are, therefore, 'universal'.

I bought a kit from JP last year for my previous Stagand it contained these gaskets. The kit I bought recently for my current Stag was from ldparts. In both cases I fitted these gaskets. The carbs for my previous car had been rebuilt by a local carb servicing shop about 12 years ago and had these gaskets. The ones on this Stag were 'missing'. They are fitted now and no adverse effects.

I’m not convinced there where gaskets under the starters originally, but if fitting them has had no adverse effects I need to try fitting them.

                        Thanks Malcolm

Let us know how you get on. One of mine leaks but only when choke pulled out.

I'm sure that Stomberg would not rely on 2 alloy castings, containing petrol, to seal reliably without a gasket.

Make sure you assemble the starter disc the right way round. My car was a pig to start from cold. Eventually I found the previous owner/greasemonkey had put it in the wrong way so it was not operating.

Agree. I also don't see why they are included in the kit if you don't need them. A lot of the other gaskets are specific to various applications, therefore discarded, but these starters are on most Stromberg CD carbs.
