VED Renewal/Reminder for your 1973 Stag - Anyone else not had one?

My 1973 Stag's road tax runs out at the end of this month (Dec) and I am probably going to SORN it as I have to replace a driveshaft.

Anyway, that aside, I have not had a renewal for VED from Swansea yet and was wondering if it was anything to do with the new tax-free thing being implemented in April?

Anyone else in the same boat?

We have 4 cars in the household from 2yrs old to 42 years old and the last 2 renewals due ,didn't send a reminder. A couple of years ago I failed to tax on time , due to not having a reminder sent, and was fined. Since then I've done it on line.

After having an accident in September 2012 I put my 1973 Stag on SORN. When repairs were finally done I registered the car from beginning of April 2013 to end of March 2014, bang on the date when the car becomes tax free. How fortunate. As you imply I would have thought you would have to pay three months duty from January to end March 2014(if you were not going on SORN) and would have received a renewal from Swansea in order to do so. So whether the fact that is not a full year or six months that mucks the system up is anyone's guess. Best to make an enquiry.

Hi Keith,

The VED reminder for my Honda, which needs a new VED licence at the end of December, has arrived already - quite early I thought!

I visited my local DVLA office before it closed to enquire about the change the eligibility date for Historic Vehicle classification. The lady there phoned Swansea and was told that the start date for this hadn't officially been declared. The budget statement said 'from April 2014 vehicles built before 1st January 1974 would be eligible', so unless you are keeping it off the road until April, you will probably have to tax it and then claim it back again when it comes into force. Hopefully all will become clear soon and our club leaders can update the advice given on our website.

They certainly seem to be missing reminders, my daily was due 1-12 no reminder received I only remembered as it's annual service was due too and I happened to check.
Tried to do it online and the system said I couldn't due to possible changes to my V5 ? So rather worried now I rang them...after 20 minutes of press this and that I managed to get through. Oh yes sir its because your tax ran out at the end of Oct 13 ! I said I don't think so I have it in the car saying 30/11/13 and it was issued at the local DVLA when I bought the car last year in December ..Oh dear he said best you send that in... would you like to renew it now whilst your on the phone? . I agreed and waited for him to sort the new disc out only to be told I cant do it the system won't let me. Best you pop down the post office and they will sort it. So much for automated service and dropping the post offices God help us all !
Local PO dealt with it in minutes, did worry me though they will never cope

The closing of local offices seems to have had a knock on effect on Swansea. I bought my Stag on the 1st October and received my V5 this morning. Admittedly, they lost the old V5 when it was sent in.
I rang them (not easy) after 6 weeks and I had to send in a new application which took a further 4 weeks.
My tax runs out 2 weeks before exemption and I intend to retax it on the due date unless she is in bits. I hope it doesn't take 10 weeks to get a refund when the exemption kicks in!

No mention of Tax-free in April and just how do they work out the £123.75 for six months???!!!!

Simples: you pay a 10% premium for paying by instalments. £225.00 + £22.50 = £247.50 divided by 2 = £123.75.

Pity I deleted the info I was sent on it, some of the content was surprising. Apparently there is a tax disc collectors club, and they're already speculating on the future value of discs. I like Railways, but I couldn't be bothered with collecting the tickets.

So what to do with that Stag disc holder? Put the SOC disc in it?

I will put the oldest tax disc that came with my stag in it pity its a 86 .
But i have 8+ years of tax discs for my daily runner maybe make some cash on them later. lol
